The building was originally designed as the head office for a Yorkshire Insurance Company in 1840. The name of the pub is taken from a hotel that stood nearby in St. Helen's Square.

Some of the popular dishes on the menu include Pulled Duck Croquettes, Garlic Mushrooms on Sourdough, hand-crafted specialty pies like Chicken and Truffled Oyster Mushroom Pie, British Steak & Nicholson's Pale Ale Pie, sausage and mash, burgers, fish and chips, and traditional Bramley Apple & Blackberry Crumble.
