Questy33: This pub in York is located on 2 floors, ground & a large cellar area, when we visited very busy. It is tucked away from the main drag, so you will need to look for it.Parking: York has challenging parking, even for Blue Badge holders. You really need to sit down at home & work out where you want to visit & the nearest parking available. Also, double-check the cost of parking.

Welcome to The Phoenix, an unspoilt, independently-run, little pub in the historic City of York.
Here you can relax and enjoy a traditional pub atmosphere without the annoyance of gaming machines, televisions, juke boxes or mobile phones.

R Pillar: A great little place, don't be fooled and pass by, this place is a must visit! The bar staff were great, both polite and helpful and the pork pies simple, but great to soak up some of the alcohol! The greatest draw was the live jazz on Wednesday evening and some of the locals bring their instruments and join in the sessions. The music was great and absolutely made our evening.

MADDOGLEP: Cannot find fault with York CAMRA pub of the year 2023. A lovely pub in one of the quieter City areas within the walls. Love the layout and decor. A front bar room with a real fire and a much larger rear area with a good rear beer courtyard to boot.I know I have been before with Jorvic, not sure about Paulicarus. Five real ales. A new brewery for me, Yorkshire Dales. Had an excellent pint of Drover's Arms dark mild 3.9%. Also in CAMRA 2024 Good Beer Guide.

Charlotte Gatehouse: such a lovely little pub!! came highly recommended from family members, and apparently the smallest pub in the uk. despite its petite size, we didn’t have a problem finding seats, and enjoyed a couple drinks here. the atmosphere was so cosy and friendly, and the service was amazing. the bar staff were very chatty and welcoming, we’ll definitely be back if we come to york again

Robert Tillotson: Stayed here with a few friends while visiting from the US. Great location for exploring the City. River walk to City Centre was lovely and all major destinations were a reasonable distance. Staff were friendly and accommodating and the Pub was fun. The apartment gave us plenty of space to relax and spread out. If I get the opportunity to revisit to York, I would make a point to return to The Lighthorseman.
MADDOGLEP: I might have been here once before with Jorvic but certainly first visit with Paulicarus. Using the pub as a hotel for the night. Excellent value for York, £70 a night. Twin room with TV, full size bath plus tea and coffee with bikkies. Breakfast £12 extra. Room 6 is on Fulford Rd so is noisy. Will need a beer slumber tonight. Bonus is that the hotel is a Thwaites pub, one real ale out of three available on arrival. A serviceable IPA. Good Madri. Three nice rooms make up the pub, one for pool, plus a nice rear courtyard. They do hot food.Nearby activities: Only a short walk outside York City Walls.

David Bates: Great community run pub, with excellent real ales.
Dom Tooze: , and there's sometimes events on like music nights and things, but I've always felt very welcome here.
Polly Cox: This is one of those pubs that feels like a hug. Incredibly warm atmosphere. Good selection of cask, ale and wine and spirits etc. The staff are all easy to talk to and the pub boasts a wonderful interior with a nostalgic feel. The beer garden is great all year round on the live music and events they have on our spectacular. I'd particularly recommend the open mic nights on Mondays.

Al: Seating wasn’t supremely comfortable upstairs, with benches with no backs and quite thin cushions.Music was quiet and made it easy to chat.The top bar was closed when we visited and it was quite busy…Overall, a fun place to go, but not necessarily the best overall from my visit.
