Roker Pier & Lighthouse has protected the entrance into Sunderland’s harbour for over a hundred years, representing a 'triumph of engineering' and being one of the City’s most iconic landmarks.

In 2012, a programme of extensive restoration began on Roker Pier & Lighthouse, a Grade II listed structure which had fallen into disrepair after decades of not being used. The restoration was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Sunderland City Council.

Visitors can explore the tunnel and lighthouse for the first time in the structure’s history via guided tours lead by volunteers within the Sunderland Sea Front Trust. The tours provide an opportunity to learn more about the history of the lighthouse and engage with local heritage.

The office for Roker Pier Tours is in the Adventure Sunderland Building next to Fausto on Marine Walk, about 30 metres from the end of the pier. Volunteers are based there to meet visitors on tour days, and can be contacted via email at rokerpier@outlook.com at other times.

Visitors can enjoy beautiful walks on the front, spot dolphins between piers, and take a nice stroll along the pier. The area offers lovely views and is a great place for walking enthusiasts.
