The ruins were first built in the 13th century as a Premonstratensian abbey, which was later converted into a Tudor mansion by Sir Thomas Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton.

The most impressive feature of the abbey today is a grand turreted gatehouse, which was built across the nave of the church.

The abbey is open daily from 10am to 5pm from April to September, and daily from 10am to 4pm from October to March.

There is a small car park at the site accessed via the track through the narrow gate in the high walls surrounding the abbey. There is a £2 charge for non-members payable by text.

English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in their care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose.
