User FAQs

Since 1673 the garden has occupied four acres of land on the edge of the Thames. It was first established by the Apothecaries in order to grow medicinal plants, and has had a wide reaching impact around the world.

The garden is a lovely walled oasis of calm in Chelsea with historic and health related importance. It is home to an incredible living plant collection, among the largest and most diverse in the world.

Explore, create and have fun with a range of family activities at the garden. There is something to inspire and engage a range of ages, including learning resources such as scavenger hunts, how-to activities, and plant fact files.

Visitors can help save the historic glasshouses by donating to the Hothouse Challenge, set by The John Browne Charitable Trust. The goal is to raise £1 million to preserve these structures and the rare plants they house.

Becoming a Friend of the Garden allows for free access year-round. This is a great way to support the preservation of the garden and enjoy its beauty and history at any time.
