Anne Marie Stagg: This shop is an amazing place to visit.It’s tiny, but absolutely chock full of all manner of creative ideas: wool, buttons, ribbons, scissors, crotchet hooks, knitting patterns, craft kits… the list is endless!I‘ve been popping into this shop for many years -it’s like being a child in a sweet shop-there are so many wonderful things and I want them all!I also appreciate that there is no hard sell-I was making enquiries about tatting materials but in the end, changed my mind. No problem!If you are looking for specific haberdashery, if you are looking for a craft kit or simply need a knitting pattern, this really is the best place in York to find what you need.
Jaime Hendrie: Great selection of all things buttons, yarn and craft. We bought some yarn from here and it was quite cheap for the sizes we got.The staff are also wonderful and very nice.

Mary Lewis: I am so glad that I decided to visit Gillies Fabrics to buy a replacement for my ancient, well used sewing machine. Although I had done some research online, I had no idea which type or make of machine would suit my needs and budget range best. All my queries were expertly answered by Richard, enabling me to make a fully informed choice. When I returned to buy my chosen model, Zoe spent a long time demonstrating to me how to use my first computerised machine. I also decided to attend the one day “Know your computerised sewing machine” course. Following Zoe’s friendly, professional, and patient tuition, I now feel confident to fully explore all my that my wonderful new machine can offer. I heartily recommend Gillies Fabrics for its warm welcome and knowledgeable expertise. I shall be back to explore the Alladin’s cave further.

Vasiliki Scurfield: I love this place. Hidden away on a farm it's a little warren of rooms brimming with a treasure trove of stitchy stuff. It was very straight forward to find the address and a clear board outside confirming Sewing Machine Repairs. The repair was completed so quickly and a very reasonable charge. A bonus was finding out that he repairs all the Berninas at the school in York, where I taught. Highly recommended without any hesitation.
