Hi hi hi, neighbours! This week it's an exciting Tasting Counter Takeover at Maj York, where our benificent tasting area throws open it's generous arms and welcomes you in to sample it's vinous delights! Nip along at the times below, and we'll endeavour to talk you through our humble selection.

Ahoy there! Avast and belay! The good ship Maj York sails ever onwards towards the Island of fine wine and cheery banter that is Foss. Splicing the mainbrace and trimming the mainsail this week are the usual crew of doughty seadogs, with the exception of midshipman Lewis, who's off in the Schwarzewalde hunting for wurst and bier. Good luck and a fair wind to him.

Anyhow, it's an Italian-themed Tasting Counter Takeover this week, where we'll be opening some favourites old and new, and if you'd like to pop down to the poopdeck between the times below, we'll endeavour to talk you through them and illicit your estimable opinions:

This week we have a Tasting Counter Takeover, wherein we'll talk you through some of the wines we have open to taste, the theme being 'Drink Better for Less'. We should all do that. So if you aren't dry January-ing, pop along at 6pm Thursday 12th, 6pm Friday 13th (yikes!) or 5pm Saturday 14th, and we'll regale you with our (ahem) knowledge.

Just a brief salvo from maj York HQ to let you know that we're off duty tomorrow, and will all be at home by our respective firesides with a glass of something revivifying, and very probably a pie of some sort (we're keen on pies down here by the redoubtable Foss, as you all know).

So, we're closed on New Years Day, and open Bank Holiday Monday 10-5.

Then it's business as usual for the remainder of January. Don't worry, we'll see you through the most miserable of the months.

4worldlovers: James Barber’s Tobacconists was founded in 1867 by the owners Great Grandfather, Joseph. Joseph had plantations and tobacco stemming factories in Kentucky USA.


The tobacco was shipped to Liverpool in the UK and then transported by train to Otley where it was manufactured into twist.


The business was taken over by his son Fred Barber and then passed on to his son Jack. James took over from his father Jack in 1980. James has since travelled to Cuba, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, China and all over Europe visiting tobacco plantations, Cigar factories and pipe factories.
