Zen-Shin Martial Arts Association in Birmingham is a professional family run martial arts academy, established in 1980. We support physical, emotional and social development. Our mission is to make our students more successful in life through practice of their martial arts and to always influence them in a positive manner. To accomplish this, we must instill ‘Black Belt Excellence’ to set goals for self improvement and to develop the non-quitting spirit that is necessary to overcome obstacles and become successful in life. Here at Zen-Shin we practice traditional Shotokan Karate which originated from Japan, we also have mixed kickboxing classes and ladies only kickboxing classes.

Our 'Little Ninja' classes start from 5-6 years. In these classes we focus on coordination and listening skills. All the things that make our children great students. We use karate as a way to reinforce self-control, and responsibility for their actions. Our classes are designed to be fun and engaging, and a great way for your child to make some new friends.

Our 'Junior' classes start from 7-11 years. These classes use Karate to increase your child's coordination, confidence and self-control. Karate is not just about kicking and punching, but has so much more to offer your child. Many of our students make new friends, and find joy in being able to be a 'karate kid' in a safe environment.

Karate has the power to benefit children with mental and physical disabilities. We work with your child to bring the best out of them. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child.


The ultimate aim of Karate at Zen-Shin is to make young adults that will go on to become the best that they can be. We do this through challenging them physically, to get fitter and stronger, to face their fears, and to stand up for themselves. We strongly believe Karate classes can be a safe space to challenge our teenage students to excel against their peers. We strive to create students that have the confidence to lead others, to know what they want in life, and have the confidence and self-discipline to work towards that goal.

At Zen-Shin we cater to all abilities and all ages and welcome all adults to come and try out a class for free.

Our Kickboxing classes are for adults and children (12yrs+) take place at our club on Soho Hill.

Kickboxing is a great workout while learning a great martial art. Expect to improve your fitness, flexibility, mobility, coordination, strength and stamina.

Our classes are relaxed and friendly with no exams or compulsory homework. We talk from day one- usually about ourselves! This helps us to speak the language with confidence and motivates us to understand what people are saying back to us- which is a skill in itself! You will never have to talk in front of the whole class – unless of course you want to – as we’ve designed a method, which gets everyone talking at the same time!

Although the atmosphere is relaxed, the class is highly structured. This helps you to make progress- while at the same time feeling at ease and knowing what to expect each week. Through carefully prepared conversations, you will get to know other learners in Spanish. Come and see for yourself!

I started life as a primary teacher in Sandwell, but went on to live in Madrid for 5 years. It was there that I learned Spanish and gained a love of the language and Spain itself. Learning the language from scratch, whilst in Madrid, has given me an insight into how it feels to be a 'learner.' I know that the methodology used in Language for Fun classes means that the focus for learning is fun, interactive and great for building confidence! I am really excited about sharing my love of Spanish with other adults. I look forward to beginning Spanish with you soon - get in touch now and come along to a free lesson.
