4worldlovers: Sutton Coldfield Fencing club is based in the north of Birmingham. It is a friendly club which runs training sessions for both juniors and adults.

Experienced fencers are welcome at any time, but beginners will need to attend one of our beginner courses run by one of our qualified coaches to teach you the basics of fencing. The next course will start on 17 April 2023.

The club is open from 7.30 - 10pm on a Monday evening, with the juniors finishing at 8.30pm. Whilst the adults fence all year, the juniors do not fence during the school breaks. The club does not open on a bank holiday.

Cost for the juniors is per half term (or £6.00 per week). For the adults it is £120/£90 for 6 months or £8/6 weekly. You will also need to acquire insurance through the BFA.

Adults: We run four week beginner courses throughout the year. We accept people generally from around the age of 13/14 - there is no upper age limit. The course costs £50 and full (non refundable) payment in advance will guarantee you a place on a first come basis. The next course will start on 17 April 2023. Get in touch if you are interested.

During the beginners course, you will be introduced to the tactics, techniques and rules of fencing working in pairs or with one of our qualified coaches. At the end of each session there will be some free time to have some fencing bouts. Our classes are small, usually up to 8 participants so you can be sure of receiving individual attention to develop your fencing skills, Once you have finished the course, you can continue to attend the club if you wish and will receive further coaching to develop your fencing technique.

Juniors: We accept a few new beginners in the junior class at the start of each half term if places are available. Generally, the minimum age we accept for juniors is nine, but we sometimes accept those who are younger from the age of eight, with prior arrangement. If your child is interested in joining the group, please contact the club in advance.

If you're coming down for the first time, wear sensible sports clothing: White-soled trainers (squash or indoor tennis shoes are ideal) and long tracksuit-type bottoms are a must with open pockets taped up (fencing in shorts is not allowed). We have been fencing as a club since being founded in 1948 by William Henry Clee, Doctor Edward Pringle, A. John Kinsley (a local farmer) and Charles Mott (a Local Council employee). *

The Club was established in 1948 when Mr Kinsley wrote a letter to the Express and Star asking for interest and support in starting up a fencing club in Wolverhampton.

From this letter he received 43 replies from people expressing interest in a club.

The first committee meeting to organise and set up a club was held in Saint Peter’s Gardens as the committee were unable to find a room to hold the meeting.

In the first two years, membership of the club held steady at around 40 members and the club continued but sadly, the club’s fortunes declined in the 1960’s.

Happily, the club survived and still continues today, 74 years after it was founded, and still meets up for fencing sessions on Monday nights at the present venue of Colton Hills School dance studio. If you are interested in learning a new sport then please come along and have a try.

4worldlovers: Cocks Moors Woods Fencing Club trains every Friday, putting the fun into fencing, whilst also looking to support and improve our fencers.


Our fencing club started in 2010 with sixteen fencers and now we regularly have over thirty fencers each Friday night. We have sixteen sets of electronic scoring equipment, ensuring our fencers get plenty of practice and fights. The fencing club fences throughout the year including holidays.

We have experienced and qualified coaches covering mainly foil and epee. Fencing is available for those aged 8 to 80+ and beginners to advanced fencers.

We run an annual epee competition in November for juniors and seniors, specifically aimed at fencers new to competition or who have been away for a while and looking to get back into competition again. The senior events are British Fencing ranking events and the U13 event is also England Youth U14 selection ranking events.

We have an Interclub League Night for foil and epee on the second Friday each month.

If you have never fenced before and would like to start fencing, please either get in touch or pop along to our fencing club to see what’s involved.

Participants should wear loose fitting top/’T’ shirt, loose fitting trousers/tracksuit trousers (no shorts or jeans) and indoor training shoes. You should also bring a bottle of water to drink.

It is anticipated that everyone completing the course will reach Foil Grade 1 level or higher. You will also be given introductions to fencing electric and refereeing. Completion of the course and coach assessment will enable fencers to fight safely with other club members.
