Shoebox Theatre: what do users think?
Nick Wright: Lovely first experience of theatre for our 4 year old girl. Will be back.
Kyle McGuire: Amazing really wonderful work if you get the chance it's a cozy and personal kinda show
D Rasmussen: Not impressed. I would not recommend Shoebox Theatre due to a bad experience I had with them.I spoke face to face with the Artistic Director about an incident involving my son during one of his classes. I found him to be argumentative, evasive and defensive however, to his credit he did admitted his behaviour was inappropriate and apologised. The Chairperson called me later that day. She was extremely upset that I have spoken to one of her staff and spoke to me in a disrespectful manner. As a punishment, she terminated my son from the course; I believe this was unjustified and over the top.I attempted to contact Shoebox after this incident to appeal the decision and to talk things through in a reasonable way but they ignored me.I am sure Shoebox do some things well, taking responsibility and responding in a professional way to problems is not one of them so an area for improvement please.
Louise Catherwood: A truly fantastic space filled with good people. The creative team here are so supportive to new creatives and I know I personally would not be anywhere near where I am without the help of Shoebox Theatre. A great space with brilliant classes and biscuits.
James David Coupland: What can I say, I have learned so much from the Shoebox Theatre. From Meisner masterclasses to achieving stage combat qualifications and seeing some top quality performances from their resident theatre shows and touring productions, the Shoebox Theatre is a great theatre hub in Swindon that never fails to surprise and wonder. To anyone wanting to study and learn their craft in theatre, I would definitely recommend the Shoebox.
Audrina Oakes: I have been attending the Actor’s Masterclasses at Shoebox Theatre since 2015. As soon as I step into that black box, I know I have entered what any struggling creative will call the “island of misfit toys”. Home. From improv to Demidov, stage combat to screen training, the tutors do everything in their power to offer actors in Swindon and the surrounding areas the highest industry-standard acting training available. It doesn’t all happen in London!Highly recommended, whether you are just starting out, or an old hand.
Tami Webster: So this year I decided to try something new and took a dive into 'acting for beginners' at the Shoebox Theatre. This is one of the best decisions i've ever made!!!!! Luke and Hannah are really welcoming and create a safe space for you to learn and explore something new.If you want to really persue the craft or if you just want to have a play with it, everyone is able to achieve their goals.Because of them, I decided to try stage combat fighting and have now found a new addiction.I'm definitely going back to Shoebox in september when the courses start up again and I keep pestering all my friends to give it a go.If you wanna do something new, or just want to spend a thursday not at home, try this! Honestly, it's worth it just for the people!
Harri Dear: Outstanding ! If you are looking for quality and focused actors training (Whatever stage you are at in your career) in a warm and safe environment, this is the place for you !I have just compleated the Actors institute scholarship program, and am overwhelmingly grateful for the quality, variety and professional standard of training provided.I graduated from E15 Acting school during the covid pandemic. Re-emerging into the theate world after lockdown, I felt rusty in my pratice. I joined the Actors institutes training program to shake off the lockdown actor blues ! The program more than exceeded my expectations, transforming my apporach to acting, perticulary in regard to text based work. The shoebox theatre provided a warm and safe inviroment to work in. As a disabled and neurodivergent actor, feeling safe and supported by those around me is supper important. The artistic director went above and beyond to facilitate this. Whether it was tailoring exercises to suit my needs, Woking at a productive and comfortable pase, or offering kind words of support and encouragement. The Artistic director facilitated the perfect balence of training, support and challenge. Our weekly classes provided core actor training in misner technique. This was taught In a very supportive way, the direction and critique was tailored to each student, helping to improve as individual actors. Small class sizes are another key feature of the course. Allowing enough time for the director and visiting practitioners to work with the actors providing constructive and focused feedback.Working with the misner technique has transformed my approach to acting, perticulary with text. Prior to the course I held a significant amount of anxiety when working with text. As a dyslexic I struggle with memorising lines and sight reading. Two very important skills to develope as an actor. I now find myself excited to work with script, and with tailored memorisation coaching, I can now learn a scene in short time frames. Beyond this, the learned text became second nature, freeing me as a preformer to work with my scene partners, without the anxiety of "what line is comming next".Outside of the regular classes we had meny visiting prationers running masterclasses and intensive training. Some of which include; bunraku puppetry, animal movement study, expressionism, comedia del arte, acting for screne and APC Stage combat certifications. We also had an amazing 6 day intensive, creating bespoke show real scenes. I can't wait to see my show real when the professional editing team have finished putting it together !P.s, The Shoebox Theatre has an amazing querky vibe full of wonderfully weird artifacts from the resident company's past shows. From Helen the maniquine, whome sits on the ticket office, to antique books, curios, and puppets. The space is overflowing with creative energy. There is also a lovely range of teas and coffees alwase avaible, perfect to settle in and make your self at home !
Essential Krav Maga Jim Maidment: The classes are welcoming and friendly, I have learnt so much over the last few years and could not recommend it enough.
Effie Laver-O'Sullivan: i joined shoebox last year and i’ve had some of my best acting experiences with them, they offer amazing masterclasses and everyone is so lovely and friendly. amazing people !
Rebecca Martin: Absolutely lush space, genuinely feels like a home away from home. They offer many opportunities to those trying to make it within the arts industry. Highly recommended this as a must see venue.
Oliver Smith: Disappointing. I often felt subjugated to bullying and humiliation by the Artistic Director in front of other students, at times I was uncomfortable and felt un-supported coming away from many classes feeling ridiculed and persecuted.I started on a student scholarship in September 2021 (post lockdown) The company did not fulfil the agreement which was 3 and a half days per week and live performances, much to my shock we ended up doing 2 hours on a Tuesday evening for the entire year. Often the Artistic Director was late and unprepared with no lesson plans, structure or clear objectives.Eventually I was terminated from the year long course by the Chairperson (The artistic director’s wife) after 11 months following an altercation with him. I found this incredibly disappointing and unfair. In my opinion the Shoebox Theatre does not match it’s slick marketing and is not a safe space for aspiring actors who are looking to develop their skills. On a more positive note, the masterclasses I attended which were typically 1 to 2 days a month were with professional directors and artists actually in the business which were enjoyable and educational.
Charissa Livingstone: My son loves this group so much everyone is so nice and welcoming!
Chris Lewry: Great venue for immersive theatre and also great training with Actor's Institute
Laura Bartle: I joined my first Shoebox class online last night and what a class it was! Wonderful to see familiar faces as well as new creative faces. Imogen Palmer was the fantastic instructor who led the course with wonderful structure and expert knowledge. There were even little breakout group sessions to work through the exercises with different people in the class to experience and learn from them even more fully. I booked for next week before the class had even finished! Massive thanks to Imogen and Shoebox for putting this on for us. In an hour and a half I already feel I've gained some vital improv knowledge to take forward.
Duncan Saunders: Fantastic creative space; the Saturday morning drama classes are amazing.Exactly the type of community theatre enterprise that there should be more of.

Swindon Arts Centre: what do users think?
Ian Dickens: Great little venue, hosts up & coming comedians so much needed place.Sometimes tricky for parking but thats not the venues fault
Jill Ryan Browne: Saw Swindon Gilbert and Sullivan's production of the Victorian classic musical comedy 'Iolanthe' - great laugh, great singing.
Sam: Went to see Babatunde here was great but the seating are not so spacious especially if you're taller than 5ft 5.. The leg room isn't great.
Pat: Enjoyed Dire Streets tribute band here.
Andi Hunte: A very intimate theatre, very close to the performers. Friendly and helpful staff. My wife and I will go again.
Julia Reid: Loved it & the staff are amazing 👏
Graham Block: Nice auditorium but it needs to be writ large (for benefit of non Swindon audience) that although it shares on line booking resources, it's NOT the Wyvern theatre - and that nearest car park is at Britannia Place.
John Wood: Love seeing Lucy Porter every time she performs here! And as always, staff are amazing, though seats are a tad uncomfortable.
Daniel Spracklen: Cosy auditorium with comfortable seats, though legroom as in most theatres could be improved. Friendly staff. Foyer and bar areas could do with updating.
Sam Ling: Second gig at the this venue and enjoyed every second. Staff are friendly and helpful and the theatre is lovely
chris: Saw brilliant show. UNDATEABLE. Smallish theatre seats designed for people with short legs
M Taylor: TERRIBLY hot and seats very close together. Surely some form of aircon could be used? The play was excellent, both Western Players and Phoenix players perform here regularly and are very professional.
Sarah Buckle: Really enjoyed the show , had plenty of room.
Bob Carvey: Get some great comedians and many other good shows including local amateur groups. Let down by high bar prices and no air conditioning. Can be very hot.
Emma Pearce: Great show, amazing performers. Love this venue.
Stephen King: A mid sized venue idea for small productions, Bands and Solo Artists.
Helen Littlechild: Great small theatre and very friendly 😀
Graham Cooke: Great venue with a wide variety of entertainment. Professor Alice Roberts was brilliant. Henry Blofeld was also excellent value.
Sara Clothier: Oye Santana. Absolutely fantastic! Loved it. Venue is a little gem 🤩
Daniel Jell: Saw Simon brodkin here last night. Fantastic comedian, good prices and decent seats. Only thing that would make it better would be to turn the air con up a little... 🔥
Jess Robinson: My local venue for all the best amateur dramatics
