Grand Hotel Sunderland: what do users think?
William Bain: This venue is classed as an "elite venue" it is a bit tired and could do with some renovation. The hotel is going cashless in the near future, and It is not possible to charge to your room. Also, the bar shuts at 11pm promp, and there is no room service. The reception and leisure centre staff are friendly and helpful. The service in the bar is slow and relatively friendly depending on who is working, although as I mentioned, 11pm is closing time, and the shutters are down at 11pm and not a second after. Again, the service in the restaurant is slow but friendly. Be aware that breakfast finishes at 9 am. on weekdays and 10 am at the weekend. The best thing about the hotel is the location, which is right on the seafront and is within walking distance of several decent restaurants, and bars which are open later than the hotel.
Thein Ohn: Good size room. Near to the beach and many cafes and restaurants nearby. 3pm quarrel in the corridor and the clangs outside in the back yard ..are negative points..
Andrew Small: The grand hotel is in a great location for the local attractions. It could be a 4 star for amenities however rooms and decor is dated, details are missed when cleaning and repairs are evident.Staff were friendly and couldn't complain at the general comfort of the room.Bar is expensive, £5.25 a pint and double gin lemonade over £10.This hotel features a nice pool great for kids however the hotel has chlorine scent. Some investment wouldn't go a miss the whole sea side is improving year on year so will only continue to attract more people
Dawid Dziunikowski: Good price, clean 👌Rooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Tom Keating: Very friendly welcome and great staff service. My visiting group liked everything, and location on the promenade with sea and beach view is a real bonus.Hotel highlights Great view, Great value …More
T Rev: Booked in here for two days, used to be the Marriot hotel but now The Grand Hotel (Owned by the Britannia Group). Normally hotels owned by Britannia are dilapidated and neglected. This hotel for the money (£131 for two days!) is extremely good value for money. Rooms are dated but perfect for my use. Clean rooms, spacious and the staff are friendly. Plus a pool, sauna, small gym, steam room and jacuzzi. Plus you’re on our beautiful coast, literally metres from Seaburn beach/Roker beach which is beautiful.
Thomas Henry: Does an awful Sunday carvery at £12.95 mostly warm soft congealed veg. Place is dirty, dated and rundown, having had the dinner decided to escape the music to the seating area at the back which stunk of bleach. Don't know how the people running this venue can't see what's wrong.
Tracie Louise: Fabulous stay, gorgeous room and amazing swimming pool had a wonderful time here with my OHRooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Great value …More
Fred Scott: Stayed recently, nice rooms, good meals lovely locationRooms: Very nice rooms good selection of types availableNearby activities: Beach Italian restaurants amusements pub grub town centre 3 miles awayWalkability: Puds, restaurants beach on doorstep
Steven: Enjoyed a 1 night stay here, rooms could be modernised more but ideal location right next to the beach with fantastic leisure facilities such as the pool, sauna and steam room. The hotel also has a small gym which is useful. Bar downstairs with a happy hour between 4 and 7 where some pints are reduced to £3 a pint. Reception staff very friendly and helpful.
Tim Frost: Adequate but very tired and run down. Needs to be given some attention to general maintenance. We did not eat breakfast as we had not heard good things about it.Also the reception continuously stinks of chlorine (very off putting)There are better hotels in the area.
Lynne Dagg: Food
Lydia Sewe: Nice affordable hotel for a weekend in Sunderland, had a great walk along the sea.should improve the communication with the reception and the sauna.could find towels yet i was told they provided by the sauna reception.Hotel highlights Quiet, Great value …More
allison pearson: Second time of staying at this hotel, have to say the room I had on my first visit was better than my stay this time, not that there were major things wrong but the small things. And maybe I paid for a better room last time I don't know.My strangest problem with the room was that there was only one ceiling light and this was in the first part of the room but going round into the bedroom area there were only lamps, and whilst there was a sofa in the first part of the room the TV was actually sat in the bedroom so if you wanted to watch you had to sit on the bed. Little things.
Sarah marginson: The staff are fantastic, kind and very helpful, in so many ways. I have dietary needs and the staff seemed to bend over backwards to help.🌟🌟🌟sxRooms: 3/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 4/5 …More

Nigel Turner: The hotel is very shabby. Possibly the shabbiest Premier Inn I've stayed at - what happened to all that investment cash that Whitbread was sitting on after selling Costa? The staff were not very helpful. My kettle kept tripping out the master switch in my room. When I asked for a replacement my request was met by a deep and unhappy sigh. The water pressure was very low, coming out as little more than a trickle, when I mentioned it to the same person he just glared at me and told me that was the way it was. (like it or lump it as my mum used to say.)There was a problem with another guest on my floor and someone from the hotel had a loud slanging match with him one evening. Not a good look. I don't know who was right or wrong, but you don't have that kind of conversation in a public space. Not a happy stay. Won't be back.See Brewers Fair for a review of the

The service is amazing and the staff is extremely friendly. If you decide to come here and you see a cat in the hallway, just let him outside as he has his own little door so he can go in and out as he pleases. I highly recommend this place.

Roker Hotel, BW Premier Collection: what do users think?
Molly Taylor: The was the perfect place for a few quiet days in Sunderland. I asked for a sea view and was gifted a beautiful room on the top floor. Getting to the room was a workout after a very long day of traveling, but it was worth every stair! There was a lift that would have saved one flight of stairs but I was not told this, only finding it on my last day. The room was perfect, breakfast downstairs at Let There Be Crumbs was great, and my dinner and beer at Poetic License (also downstairs) was delicious. I needed a good rest and this was definitely the spot!Nearby activities: I visited the National Glass Centre. It was fascinating and completely worth the time. It's also free. Make sure you are there for the glass blowing demonstration. Nice cafe and walk along the river. Sunderland Bridge is right around the corner.
John Evans: Excellent venue good beer good foodService: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Bambos Iguanadon: Great in all.Unwelcoming welcome staff though really put a down on it to start, really didn't fit with the rest of the stay. Maybe a bad day for both of them who knows!Room was nice, large, jacuzzi bath. No full length mirror which was strange but other touches were great.Would stay again.
Daniel Kibblewhite-Pounds: This was a pleasure to stay in. We where greated by the full proper size bar and it came with it's very own Gin Distillery ( gift boxes available at reception).Fine food choices could be enjoyed in the bar or with a bit more socal etiquette in the raised separate dining area.We had a sly half after the 3 hr drive then on to reception to find out that we had only, so far, experienced one half of this sprawling super hotel. In the left wing ( all facing the sea front) is a cafe or crumbery (a place to make cake crumbs). Sweet treats that delight any desert lover with a plethora of hot beverages. Seating was also plentiful.Slightly staggering by this amazing seafront hotel we made our way to our room. It was an interesting tour through the building. Our room was just big enough for a short break and the bathroom was great.Buffet and hot breakfast the next morning was served in the cafe. The exploration of the local sea front was a joy. I'm sure we shall return.Loved it. Couples. Short break.
Arno van Dalsum: Noisy, water from the tap looks ugly, temperature in the room and in the breakfast area is too high.Rooms: 2/5|Service: 4/5|Location: 4/5Hotel highlights Great view, Romantic …More

Christian Glover: Everything thing about this one is good! Great location for Sunderland and surrounding area and great for seaside walks. The hotel is just across the road from the beach and only about 30 min walk to Sunderland, so ideal. The staff are lovely really, polite, friendly and helpful. The hotel is very clean and very tastefully decorated. The room we had was very pleasing and had everything you needed. The bar area was fantastic and always busy and full of life, very unusual for a hotel to have one as good as this! The Italian restaurant next door is fantastic too and definitely worth a visit, so another plus with this hotel. We would certainly return although not really our area, so fairly unlikely but would certainly remember this one for giving us a great weekend break. Best Western hotels always seem to give more than you expect!

R_Cat_R R: We came here as day spa guests. It's 14.50 pp and no towel is provided. The jacuzzi is spacious but there is no respite from the bubbles and this meant it wasn't hot enough for me. It seemed to be a bit rough around the edges since the last time I came unfortunately.
Paul Harrison: Fantastic service throughout. Excellent location to cinema and restaurants. The pool, jacuzzi sauna and steam room was perfect. We will be returning.Rooms: 10/10 stayed in room 108, very comfortable bed and plenty of space to move around.Nearby activities: Cinema, McDonald's, Nandos, local pubFood & drinks: We had breakfast in the hotel. A little pricey but it is all you can eat.
Richard Wright: Stayed here two nights and someone charged a bar bill to my room, didn’t get charged, sorted it at the hotel. The breakfast is ok but I’ve had better in a hotel in Bristol. They don’t service your room everyday.

Hope Kae Carmn: Overall I would rate this hotel from my experience a 6.5/10. Stayed here last night as part of a coach trip. The location suited our purpose (coach trip group)Positives :Staff:The staff were great, all of them were really friendly and attentive 10/10 for the staffRoom:The room was also good, there was a TV, kettle, decaf options, desk and chair, ironing board/iron, hairdryer. The bathroom looked brand new.Great water pressure and the water runs hot to cold instantly.Everything in the rooms looked very cleanThe bed was very comfy! Once we got to sleep we did have an excellent sleepFood: a nice range of food available at breakfastthe mini crossiants at breakfast were very good, scrambled Eggs/eggs, mushrooms and hash browns were also nice,Facilities: There are excellent facilities, swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam room I think (did not use myself as did not realise when booking coach trip we would be staying somewhere with such facilities) but a lady on my coach trip said she used them and it was great 10/10 facilities. There is a bar too with 2 TV screensBar: average price for hotels IMO, was £5.10 for single rum and cokeExtra: car park looked a big size, clean communal areasNegatives:Noise: there was a 21st birthday party being held in a suite on the ground floor near the restaurant area and all throughout dinner there was thumping bass music blasting out. The music continued until late evening, I don't know when it finished but was still loud and heard on the 2nd floor at 23:10Food:Dinner:Took ages to get fed we were told dinner was at 7pm,arrived at 7pm and it was 7:40pm before getting the starter. It was nearly 20 past 8 before were served our main course :-( the food was not good. I had veg soup and it was not very warm. The bread roll with it was nice. The main course I choose chicken and it was very dry. Small portions, 2 hard roast potatoes, 3 slithers of carrot +1 small broccoli floret. The main course was only eaten because we were so hungryThe pudding we chose was chocolate fudge cake with chantilly cream but was dry and staleAlso the cutlery could do with a good going over, many of the forks on our table had prongs bent out of shape, harder to useBreakfast :We were told our time slot was 8am, Everything kept running out, the plates, sauces, the food, lots of people queuing up and standing,No water jugGot a latte from the coffee machine and it was very watery.Other :The stairway up to the 2nd floor stinks of urineThe lighting in the restaurant was very dimSummary : bed was comfy, staff were lovely and great facilities but the loud music and food issues would prompt me to choose a different hotel if I was in the areaNoteworthy details: Excellent facilities, sauna, steam room, gym and pool
Rachel Shepherd (Justalittleunnatural): Pros:The Hotel was well presented and clean. The room was stunning and cam with a a frige. The beds were incredibly comfy and I had a fantastic night sleep. The breakfast was a buffet and though a little heptic, was a good option to suit all.Cons:The food was not their atrong point. I had the chicken supreme and the chixk was dry and tasteless, the roast potatoes were pale, cold and very underdone. The fudge cake was dry and stale. the food took 40 mins to arrive and ariund 40 minutes between each course. The drinks are very pricy but the staff are very attentive which makes up for thr fact. The corridor smelled or urine. All in all, the room was great but ai wouldnt visit again.
Irving waters: Lovely place. Staff very professional.

Michael H: ‘This IS 5 star service!’ …was the title of my previous review, but having visited recently this has changed as standards have slipped. I booked for a twilight evening spa and we had a nice time, but I expected excellence for the price. Speaking of the price, it has increased yet the standard seems to have slipped. Finishing touches weren’t there and the spa seemed over crowded in comparison to previous visits. No space to sit round the pool and countless chairs just covered in used towels. Many facilities unusable due to the fact they were full. I booked this trip for my partners birthday and stipulated this when booking. No one went above and beyond other than a simple “Happy Birthday” upon arrival. I was expecting more considering this is a ‘5 star service’ and having previously visited for birthdays and noticing more of an effort had been made. Food was tasty but the menu has changed, although doesn’t appear to be a positive change. The price of this spa, does not reflect the quality.Overall, I’m dissatisfied with my visit. Yes we had a nice time but it was poor in comparison to many visits prior. I would always recommend this spa to friends, family, and colleagues stating it was the best in the North; however, I can no longer vouch for that. I feel extremely disappointed as lots of special memories have been made here at Seaham Hall, but I think it’s time to look for another place.
Alannah Busby (Mrs B): THIS is just my favourite place ... It's just set in such a stunning location. This visit, we had a room with a hot tub in our little private garden...watching the sunset in the warm bubbles was bliss (thinking no one is wanting to be outside in a hot tub in February in Sunderland) I WAS WRONG ...it was fabulous!!Staff as always were brilliant. Food in the restaurant was sublime.. but the whisky & cigars were my fave part ... Cuban cigars (obviously) ... Our garden suite was just stunning. The little outside fire was a delightful touch! Robes & slippers were at the ready & breakfast was just dreamy! PerfectionRooms: Rooms are stunning well thought out with nice touches like fresh candles robes ectWalkability: The grounds are stunning
Nicki Brady: Went for a last minute twilight spa and upon arrival, we were greeted with a beautiful entrance into the spa, and honey tea. The girls at reception showed us around and gave us robes and slippers.I have to say, this is one of the best spas I have ever been to. The pool is lovely and warm, there's ice cold plunge pools, jacuzzi's outside (I didn't get a chance to try them out) and a nice, hot shallow pool in the gardens, to relax in that has jets and a powerful spout that releases water with the press of a button. There are steam rooms and two saunas with different themes. I chilled out in the one with the salt lamp wall and it was bliss. My husband and I were in our element here. When it came to dinner time, we went to the restaurant where a lovely lady gave us fresh robes and slippers. The food was quick and very delicious!I will definitely be back here 100% and highly recommend the visit. If the spa is this good, I can imagine the stay at the hotel will be just as good!

Nicola Garrington: Very disappointed with Lovelace suite and inedible Taster menuPaid £595 plus £100 Spa treatment for overnight stay with taster menu . No complaints about Staff or Spa-so let me keep to the point Suite absolutely freezing downstairs with radiators in bathrooms off ! . Unhygienic partially used toilet rolls, coffee machine had to be moved to actually use and meagre 4 coffee pods It was so cold downstairs sat with my coat on incredibly unpleasantFood was the worst I have ever tasted Each course was predominately dark brown with no colour and the flavours were so overpowering they were inedible .I quietly voiced my concerns at check out and I have had no response .I am very unhappy with my experienceI spoke to several guests who ate at the same taster menu and ALL said it was not an experience they wanted to repeat
