Ilona Tate Newcastle Tai Chi Qigong: what do users think?
Judith Wallace: Excellent classes which benefit the mind as much as the body. I always come away feeling relaxed and energised.
Diane Coulson: I started Ilona’s Tai Chi classes as a means of keeping fit. I have found that as well as exercising my body Tai Chi Qiong challenges and exercises my brain. I would recommend the classes to anyone of any age and fitness. You will not be disappointed.
Paula Bennett: I've been attending the classes for over ten years. The forms and exercises we've learnt help to keep me supple and relaxed. Would recommend Tai Chi to anyone as age is no barrier in starting this type of exercise.

Newcastle Tai Chi (Benton): what do users think?
Neelam Sharma: Having previously taken Tai Chi classes, attending my first induction session with Rachel at Newcastle Tai Chi, it was clear from the start this was going to be a very different experience. Newcastle Tai Chi provides a calm, quiet, measured and most importantly authentic approach to teaching Tai Chi and Martial ArtsClasses are interesting and varied and may include group work, individual practise, partner work, exercises, self massage, guided body scan meditations and more. Both teachers, Rachel and Sifu, as well as fellow students are friendly, approachable and respectful.Newcastle Tai Chi provides a welcome haven in a too busy world to slow down and if you're thinking of attending I would quote what Rachel frequently says to me "Stop thinking and just do it!"
Gary Clewes: I have done martial arts most of my life and have loved every aspect of it since I can remember. I had always practiced the hard style arts: Tae Kwon Do, Freestyle Karate, Muay Thai. However, as I got older and after a break from the arts, I found myself wanting to get back into it and having a real interest in finding a style and school which taught more traditional arts and more internal based rather than the normal sport style arts which are ten a penny now.I came across Newcastle Tai Chi a few years ago and read the website back to front and it seemed to be exactly what I was looking for but for whatever reason I put off that first step until just over a year ago…. What a mistake that was and I still kick myself for not doing anything about it sooner. The school is very welcoming and friendly, I enjoyed it from the first moment I walked through the doors. The way of learning and the style of art is so very very different to anything I’ve done before… I love it. Relaxed, friendly, fun.Rachel is very knowledgeable and takes the beginners and health students though the basics and considerately explains what and why you are practicing the various moves.Sifu Waller’s expansive knowledge of the art and biomechanics (amongst many other things) is quite simply mind blowing! I don’t think I’ve come away from a single class without my mind been blown. If you can open your mind and try and absorb as much as possible that Sifu teaches you, you will not regret it. There is always something new to learn, micro adjustments that Sifu can see that you cannot and the massive difference it makes is incredible.
John Phillipson: I have just completed my first year at Newcastle Tai Chi. I joined after having a hip replacement, as I wanted to improve my agility and balance. I have gained so much more. Classes are warm and friendly, but it is the quality of teaching which makes the school outstanding. Sifu Waller has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Taijiquan, Baguazhang and many other martial arts, which means that his teaching is authentic and inspirational. I would highly recommend the school to those who want to improve general health and mobility, I have certainly benefitted hugely. To those wishing to take the study of these sophisticated martial arts further, I would say that Sifu Waller is one of the few people who can provide detailed and authentic teaching
Dan Jenkins: After lockdown, wanted to get back into martial arts for health, fitness, and a new challenge. Looking over this club's website immediately ticked many boxes - authenticity, good teaching structure, excellent background info. After spending some time training here also found teaching is very responsive to students needs/questions, and you get to improve in areas you didn't know could be trained! Hips, back, chest and everything else have much better flexibility, co-ordination and balance. Many practical applications of bio-mechanics, full body strength, strategy & tactics. Great depth of training material, many opportunities to challenge yourself. Always a practical, no-nonsense, learn by doing approach
Revd Alan Meighen: Brilliant, transformative and eye-opening experience. Friendly and supportive group of students. Led by patient, perceptive and expert tutors. I am thoroughly enjoying and benefitting from this 'meditation in movement' and highly recommend this school.
Avinash Premraj: In today’s very fast paced world, sometimes you need to find a way to switch off and focus on training your mind and your body focusing on long term benefits rather than just here and now. Newcastle Tai Chi has enabled me to do just that!I stumbled across this school after reading the reviews and I was blown away by the induction classes that I just had to continue on. It’s a very friendly school built on years and years of experience gained by Rachel and Sifu that can be easily seen in both health and martial syllabus the school teaches. If you are looking to improve your overall health and wellbeing or study a form of martial arts, look no further than Newcastle Tai Chi. I would highly recommend it.
Tobias Sarra: Likes:- Useful physical and psychological practice- Slow, considered dissemination of teachingsDislikes:- Condescending and subtly controlling behaviours of school leaders- Manipulative power structure designed to quash any form of questioning from students, without appropriate explanation (ultimately a barrier to learning, and a sign of disrespect from teacher to student)If enough people are leaving in the manners listed on the school website, perhaps there's a problem with the school itself? (I've rarely seen such behaviour in any other environment, and find it worrying and somewhat manipulative that the school feels the need to justify this to potential students).'Excuses

When a student leaves the class, they typically need to justify it to themselves. Rather than be honest, the individual blames the teacher, the art, the syllabus, the atmosphere.
In most cases, the teacher sees the seeds of their discontent months ahead. If the student is genuinely keen to learn taijiquan, they are likely to seek out tuition elsewhere. But this seldom happens.

Blame

Although some people leave because they have moved town or lost their job, most people leave because they are too lazy to do the work. Admitting this is another matter entirely.
It is far easier to blame somebody else for your own shortcomings.'AITA?
DAWN PICKETT: I checked out the google reviews when I was looking for a Tai Chi School. The school has far exceeded my expectations. Sifu and Rachel have in depth knowledge of the art, excellent teaching skills and very supportive. The students at the school are friendly and encouraging. If you want to improve your health, enjoy a challenge and also have fun, then, I would recommend you give Newcastle Tai Chi School a try.
Peter Dixon: I originally came to tai chi class thinking it would be something like an exercise class, something once a week that I would turn up to and feel a bit better. I was pleased to find myself completely incorrect, it is so much more than what I first believed. I would urge anyone to browse the website to get a taste of how much knowledge is on offer. Sifu and Rachel are really welcoming and passionate about what they do which really shows in their teaching. Anybody who would like to give tai chi a try, I can’t recommend Newcastle Tai Chi enough!
Rachel Waller: Dear Rachel,I have put my thoughts down and I hope this is what you can use.“Newcastle Tai Chi: 5 starsComing home from my first class at the Newcastle Tai Chi school, feeling whole, relaxed and grounded as if I had had the most intensive massage, is something I never expected. And it happens every week.As an older person with inflammatory arthritis who has had 5 joints replaced, I was keen to find a suitable exercise that would not exacerbate the arthritis in my remaining joints. I have been delighted to find an exercise that improves the way I use my joints and makes me feel even better than I could have ever imagined.I was recommended to take up Tai Chi by a friend and I chose Newcastle Tai Chi simply because it was the nearest to me and it seemed to be very well organised. On my very first attendance I adjusted my expectations upwards. I became aware of the significance of Sifu Waller, the leader of the school, in the ethos and high standards the school sets; I became aware of his amazing credentials as one of the most highly qualified teachers in the UK. His wife, Rachel, is equally amazing in her years of experience, her grace and elegance, providing inspiring, knowledgeable, inclusive guidance that is somehow personal to you, while at the same time she keeps a 360-degree eye on the rest of the class.I came away from that first class being so very grateful that I had chosen Newcastle Tai Chi.The main benefit I was seeking is being delivered (my journey stretches out enticingly before me), but there are other unexpected benefits;• a font of technical knowledge accumulated by Rachel and Sifu and published on the school website that members of the school have access to (Despite researching the website weekly, I have yet to get anywhere near exhausting its contents).• additional activities in the form of Tai Chi in the park and workshops• experienced and friendly help, freely offered by senior members of the school,• a strong sense of camaraderie,• a social aspect in the form of out-of-school activities, and finally• the Tea Club.I am surprised to find in Newcastle Tai Chi something that far exceeds what I originally sought for my joints. I am inspired to do better, to be calmer and to relax more and I have found something that appeals to my view on life. That is far more than you would get at an average tai chi session.”Joan
Peto Michalak: I was new to Tai Chi and haven't studied Taijiquan before attending the first class. School instructors and the other students made me feel very welcome. It is immediately apparent that the instructors possess profound understanding on how a body works and have many years of experience practising and teaching the art. Each class is very well structured, follows an in-depth syllabus with great focus on practical applications, and the website offers a lot of background information. Each student receives a personalised corrections and guidance. Plus, each class is a lot of fun, and the time just flies by. I highly recommended signing up for a taster or an induction course if you are interested in focusing on your health, self-defence, and/or the martial art.
40asik: I will absolutely recommended this school to everyone no matter what age or gender! Sifu Waller and Rachel are both excellent and with lots of patience for everyone. I am member only half year but I love it. Help me keep my mind at peace and my body more healthy.
Maria Valassia Peppa: The Newcastle Tai Chi school is not like other Tai Chi schools is a unique school that teaches and brings harmony in mind and body: it teaches us among others how to use our body efficiently; how to use our body strength effortlessly; how to connect our mind and body to the present moment; how to sense every single act we do with our body; how to keep ourselves connected with our internal strength all the time; how to use our body following its bio-mechanical structure while including no force and many other that have an enormous positive impact to our selves as a whole unity. I am extremely grateful to be part of the Newcastle Tai Chi school and being taught by Sifu all amazing benefits taijiquan entails for my well being, mental and body strength. I have been a member of the school for the last three years now and I have observed the benefits on my body (e.g. more toned muscles than before on my legs, better sensation of body tension) while practicing the Tai Chi syllabus on a consistent-basis without strenuous effort or exertive movements. Sifu and Rachel put a massive effort to run each workshop providing a great knowledge and insightful support to all members to help us increase our performance. I see Newcastle Tai Chi as a personal investment for my holistic well being.
Chris Young: I have been involved in the world of martial arts since I was 8 (around 40 years), having a 2nd Dan grade in Karate and Jujitsu and also having experience in 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung fu.I have been interested in the internal arts, specifically Taijiquan and Baguazhang for many years but realised how hard it is to find someone teaching the authentic art. With Sifu Waller I found what I was looking for!Sifu's understanding and knowledge is outstanding. The syllabus is both deep and broad allowing a structured development of each student as they progress.Sifu Waller teaches the full art not just the commonly seen "health tai chi". This is a martial art that is subtle and effective, using body structure and biodynamics to achieve success. What I also love is the freedom to make your own decisions to what level you wish to study. Just interested in the health benefits, then there is a health syllabus or a slightly more advanced fitness syllabus.Want to take the training further, learning self defence, the full art of Taijiquan or the full Kung fu syllabus including Taijiquan and Baguazhang? That’s available if you have the desire and commitment to grasp it.The class has a well considered structure designed over many years and a friendly and fun approach suitable for anyone.I can highly recommend this class for anyone with the passion and dedication to learn a true martial art or someone with a desire to improve their health. There is no other class in the whole of the North East like it!
Tony Jackman: Adrenalin fueled, high energy activities and some bad habits had been the way I lived my life. This has left me with a damaged knee and hands as well as increasing joint aches with reducing mobility and strength. Fully expecting at least one knee replacement and further reducing mobility could only see myself placing more responsibility for my health onto the NHS.Until I saw the light and reconsidered my approach to everything. Regarding health and well being Tai Chi always stood out to be the optimal activity. But with so many places offering Tai Chi where do I go? Following some diligent research on-line and in the library I identified the handful of most highly qualified teachers in the country. Then was amazed to find one such teacher was right here in Newcastle. I contacted Newcastle Tai Chi and what a good move that has turned out to be.Having attended the school for a number of months now what is happening for me is nothing short of incredible. The strength and stability developing around my knees has put thoughts of joint replacements out of mind altogether. I've increased strength and muscle tone similar to when I attended a gym for years. But, without one drop of sweat! My energy level has also dramatically increased and sense of well being. As well as improved flexibility and movement , which I had expected. All this with only the right attitude and regular practice, no fancy equipment required. What is required however is the right teaching. The quality and standard of the teaching at my school, and their whole approach to health and well being, is done with a level of integrity I would only have expected to find in the best schools in China it's self. Not just teaching the movements but also the understanding behind the movements, which is necessary to properly benefit from Tai Chi. Their relaxed and friendly environment are helping with learning and practicing what can be a challenging skill to master.I must be driving passed at least a dozen schools teaching Tai Chi on the way to my school every Monday. But would consider myself mad to even contemplate practicing Tai Chi anywhere else. Tai Chi, the open secret. All schools maybe open, the secret is the right school.
Paul Reynolds: I have been a member of Newcastle Tai Chi for just over four years now. Prior to that I had spent a few years as a dedicated gym bunny with an assortment of personal trainers, but had started to find the whole endeavour a bit mindless and unnecessarily grueling. Having spent several years practising other martial arts in the past, I decided to look around for an alternative and, after some judicious Googling, spent several weeks revisiting Sifu's frankly encyclopaedic website. This sounded ideal.I came along to my first class and got a warm welcome and a thorough induction from Rachel. None of the customary strutting or posturing from the more senior students either: everyone I met was friendly, approachable and obviously enthused by what they were learning regardless of their level of skill. Given my past experience and my aspiration to start the martial syllabus, I have to admit to feeling a bit bemused at times during those first few weeks. Why was I being asked to hold an apparently untaxing posture for ten minutes? How could such slow, soft movements possibly be of any benefit in defending myself? I persevered. As I gradually learned more of the sequence of movements called the Long Yang form and had more and more opportunities to see Sifu demonstrate the devastating significance behind even the most subtle of these movements, things began to make sense.Though I feel as though I have come a long way in my own journey with taijiquan, I realise I have scarcely taken the first step towards understanding the art and all that Sifu has to teach. The syllabus he has developed is comprehensive and staggering in its scale, but also tangible and achievable for anyone willing to shed their preconceptions and pursue it. Sifu's teaching is predicated entirely on biomechanics and efficiency of movement. It is also refreshingly devoid of the horses**t and hokum that so regrettably accompanies most supposed tai chi classes these days. Countless times I have found myself confounded by a particular application and convinced it couldn't possibly work, only to find myself exerting strength I couldn't have imagined thanks to one tiny adjustment or subtle shift of perspective from Sifu. I have no doubt that even those students who have only been able to attend the class for a relatively short period of time have emerged with a renewed understanding of their body and its potential.Add to all this the variety of what's on offer (from girls' nights to tea clubs, workshops to weapons) and we are really very privileged to have such an exceptional class based in the North East.If you are considering coming along for the first time, don't hesitate. We look forward to meeting you.
Martin Isherwood: This class is a rare opportunity to learn genuine Tai Chi from an experienced, professional teacher. I find the class to be friendly and enjoyable whilst still being disciplined, structured and safe. I would urge anyone interested in Tai Chi to give this class a try as the martial aspects of the teaching add a real focus to the training. The training itself is very different to anything I have seen before, so come with an open mind! All levels are catered for, from 'health only' to serious martial artist and the teaching is very professional and well organised.
Joanne Stewart: For people interested in relaxing, I'd definitely recommend Newcastle Tai chi (Benton) class. I joined back in February 2019 and enjoy every class. I needed a way to leave stress behind me, and recover my muscle strength and feeling after 2 c-sections left me with severed nerves, and Tai chi has much improved things. I feel more aware of what my body can do, what strength there is, where I hold tension. I am calmer, less anxious, than I used to be, being able to do Tai chi has helped keep me grounded. Members are friendly and we like to get out on social events for class meals. I would have loved to have found Tai chi class a lot earlier in life.
Julia Pattison: I found Newcastle Tai Chi following an Internet search not long after reading an article on the health benefits of qigong about 3 years ago. I'd never previously done any martial art, so I had no idea what to expect. I found the school to be welcoming and friendly, with all students, whatever their level being taught in the same hall. Students can learn as little or as much as they want to from exceptional teachers who teach a vast syllabus. I'm in my 50's, but have never felt as healthy and strong as I do now. I can't recommend the school highly enough.
Mayur Chauhan: I am so glad to have found such a fantastic club to learn and train in tai chi. Both the teachers, Sufi Waller and Rachel, not only possess significant martial skills and knowledge regarding tai chi, but are also very patient with beginners like myself. I like the fact that in this club, tai chi is taught in a structured method ensuring beginners develop a solid foundation as they progress further. I like that even though there may be a lot of students training, the teachers have time to see how one’s own practice is developing and have time to make suggestions, give explanations, correct any bad practice and give encouragement. I like the fact that the club caters for students of all abilities with beginners like myself to highly experienced individuals who also help beginners.I would recommend this club to any one interested in tai chi not only as a martial art but also for its health benefits. It is really a superb club.
Malcolm Berry: Like a lot of people, I thought Tai Chi was just something that old folks did in the park, but the depth of information on the website grabbed my interest, so I gave it a try. So glad I did. This is real Tai Chi taught to an exceptional standard. At the health and fitness level it teaches you to move efficiently, minimise stress on your joints, and restores flexibility, strength and balance. But if you want to take it further it opens up the martial arts of taijiquan and baguazhang, which teach you to read your opponents and use their own energy against them. When you see this demonstrated by sifu Waller you kind of forget any preconceptions.

Thoroughly enjoyed a truly great class and I'll be sure to be back next time I'm in Newcastle.
Anthony Goodman: This is a fantastic school. Was in my 40s, low in confidence, depressed and out of shape. Decided to try a martial arts class to see if it would help increase my confidence.
