Ashton Community Chess Club: what do users think?
helen lomas: Much Better than kids being glued to a screen
Stephen Eddleston: Ashton Community Chess ♟️ Club is predominantly a children’s chess club run by founder David Hardy in Ashton-under-Lyne Tameside. With this in mind I’m very pleased to be accepted as a member to play and compete alongside them. They meet on a Wednesday evening for a couple of hours. You’ll receive a warm welcome from David,Glen and the team catering for pretty much all standards from beginner upwards.Members are paired off accordingly on a practise session but not always based on ability giving a friendly yet competitive edge to the evening.David will go through a classic game from the past on the big screen and actively encourages members to join in and discuss the next move and or alternatives moves. He will get around all the boards in play over the course of the night and knows everyone by name. There’s daily chess puzzles posted on social media to solve every day to keep things ticking over.A short interval after the demonstration game with a chance to buy something from the ‘Tuck Shop!’ containing some modern and old school classics from back in the day.The club runs a couple of teams in different leagues both Rapid play and long play if you’re interested in competing against other clubs both at home and away.I personally think this chess club has the lot coupled with a great venue and there’s an option for chess coaching by the host. There’s even a bespoke chess Library 📚 catering yet again for all levels of ability. If you’re interested and or intrigued by perhaps the best indoor board game in the world regardless of age, get yourself along you won’t be disappointed. All the details are available including email and a telephone number to make contact.I’ve played the game since an early age and I’d like to think my game is better since joining in most aspects of this game, probably my only regret on a personal note is not joining sooner.
Paul Down: I would highly recommend. I took my 10 year old boy and he loved it and Pete who helped him play chess was brilliant and friendly I would give more than 5 stars if I could
Sean Marsh: David and his excellent team of assistants provide a fabulous playing environment for the children. The club offers expert tuition, regular tournaments and other practice sessions. The club's numbers continue to grow and I would happily recommend it to all juniors.
Milagros Healey: great club for beginners and experienced players, lovely place to play and learn in a warm friendly atmosphere... well done guys
Paula Courchene: Brilliant club, well managed and can't praise high enough what the club is doing. Great prices for families, £1 for 2.5 hours including tuition. Would recommend 👏
seri abraham: My 8 yr old has been going to the club for nearly an year now and I cannot recommend the club highly. The game analysis and lessons are spot on. Love the new initiative to develop the intermediates. Right level of support and challenge. Very well run and an exceptional chess club for beginners and experts alike.
Svetlana Popova: Attended Chess Tournament even at the Club and really enjoyed the experience and facilities it has to offer to all abilities Chess players 😁 Highly Recommend to attending this Club for Chess journey!
Gail Busby: I cannot overstate how amazing this chess club is. My son (11) has been playing chess for 4 years. He has has had private tuition. We were recently told about Ashton Community Chess Club by a friend and went along to check it out. Well, what a wonderful environment environment for learning! All levels catered for. David Hardy is an amazing teacher. He knows each child by name and the chess club comprises puzzles, playing chess, a lesson and then more chess. The atmosphere is fantastic and the tuition second to none. I've even been inspired to learn to play myself!! I recommend this chess club without hesitation.
Andrea Price: My son recently joined Ashton Community Chess Club and was made to feel very welcome. The teaching by David is fantastic and it has been wonderful to see my son progress so quickly , even giving him the confidence to compete in his first tournament within just a few weeks. I would highly recommend anyone interested in chess to join whatever level you may be at because the tutoring is tailored to suit all levels .
No Just no: My son has been attending the club for several months now and he is really enjoying the welcoming atmosphere. The teaching by David Hardy is always engaging and thought provoking, setting challenges and puzzles as well as teaching and developing techniques and skills. The children are coached and tutored at every stage from beginners to experienced players. They are given opportunities to compete with different players of different abilities every week. The games are friendly and all the players encourage each other under David's tuition and guidance. My son wouldn't miss it.
Theodoros Vrouchos: My son joined the club a few months ago. Lessons are engaging and Mr Hardy's passion for the game is palpable. Wednesday afternoons are now a weekly highlight for my son. Mr Hardy has even offered on the spot tips and lessons on line. During our recent holidays my son was asking to challenge Mr Hardy for an online game, spent a long time looking for a chess set based on ancient Greek characters and challenged many grown ups for a game.Everyone in the club is very friendly, from young children to adults. I would very highly recommend this club for chess players of all ages.
Sarah N: My son joined Ashton Chess Club a few months ago and was given a warm welcome.  I expected the club to be a group of people who love chess and who play games with each other.  It’s all that and more.  Every week there is a lesson that’s so interesting even I enjoy it and I don’t play chess,Mr Hardy uses a range of techniques to engage his pupils, and his love of the game is infectious.  My son really enjoys the teaching and talks to me about it on the way home each week. When my son’s school class was isolating recently, Mr Hardy even provided some home tuition over Zoom.I feel like Mr Hardy knows his club members well and I would highly recommend Ashton Chess Club to all.
Jack Mundy: Dave's been teaching me from roughly 2010 and after a few years away from chess he has started teaching me again, if you're interested in getting into chess/looking to improve, there's no reason not to try ashton chess club as there's a wide variety of strength within the club
Rachel Newton: Brilliant for players of all abilities. My son has had tuition from ashton for a number of years the teaching is amazing - my son managed to be selected for the EPSCA England Chess Team at 10 thanks to the guidance and support from the coaches I would really recommend
Susan rogers: Great club! My son has been attending Ashton Community Chess Club for the last 7 years and has improved year on year. Dave uses a mixture of teaching, competitions, games and fun to keep the club sessions interesting (and the tuck shop is always a hit!). It's a great group of kids run by someone who is very knowledgeable and passionate about chess. I would highly recommend this chess club.
Gareth P: Love going to the club - great teaching and tuition has really improved my chess.
Joel McBeath: Fantastic club. Been going to the club since 2014 and always a friendly and fun place to play. Offers tuition and always great teaching from David. Highly recommend
D K: My son is an active chess player and has played for Dave’s team in numerous chess events over the years. He is a fantastic coach providing expert tuition and support which has helped my son make big improvements. He is passionate about junior chess which shows in his organised and supportive approach. I wholeheartedly recommend the club and Dave’s tuition for junior chess players in the area. 👍

Rahul (LRX): 10 yr old alum. Lovely to go back for my niece’s open day and see some old faces.
Lucy April: Its ok but i wish i was studying music
Alan Towse: I tutor on the Stockport beekeeping course and the facilities are excellent. The display screens have been updated so you can access the computer system directly from the board instead of a terminal. Brilliant. Staff are very helpful.
Crispy Voices: Great staff, great students for the most part- a very welcoming environment with a very relaxed vibe to it. I’ve had to knock a star off purely because the amount of underage smoking that went on during my time there used to make me very uncomfortable. The courses were very interesting with kids who were focused on their learning, and the staff were very helpful :)
Martin Ratcliffe: My youngest daughter is studying at this college. She will soon finish her 1st year of 2 doing A levels. She enjoys her time, and is doing well. To be recommended
Ben Birch: good schoolwould recommend

James Bancroft: It's a fantastic college ever. The staff was very helpful and it's been wonderful. I can't stop talking about it. It's brilliant. Brilliant staff and two best tutors at Pathways I like. Nadya Drake and Thom Greensill.
B H (ベス): My time studying there were honestly two of the best years of my life. My teachers were kind and dedicated but also firm, and definitely helped motivate me to push my grades up. The facilities were outstanding, with so much subject choice that really helped focus my decisions for a future career path. I felt very well looked-after and that I was given the opportunity to thrive. It's also gorgeous on the inside, modern and minimalist but with a beautiful little indoor chapel with stained glass windows. I loved studying here as a college student and also benefited from their evening classes, which are also very high-standard. Both my younger brother and sister also attended and were able to perform to the best of their ability.
Amy McCall: Top class college, get out of it what you put in and outstanding teachers!
Dylan Bishop: AHAHAHAHA Chamak school
Yuri Gagarin: Basically a big school full of chav muppets selling spice, trust me GET A JOB INNIT YO plus teachers dont care unless youre a genius.
