The best time to visit is during the winter when huge numbers of waders can be seen on the lakes at high tide. Thousands of brent geese graze on the fields, and short eared owls are out hunting. The reserve also comes to life during the spring and summer migrations, with warblers, redstarts, spotted flycatchers, wrynecks, wheatears, and whinchats passing through.

Visitors can access the reserve by road, cycle, rail, or bus. There are car parks at both the western and eastern entrances, with bike racks available. The Portsmouth to Havant cycleway runs along the northern edge of the reserve, and Hilsea train station is 1½ miles away with regular trains. The 21 bus service runs from Portsmouth Harbour to Havant, with a stop near the reserve.

Visitors should be aware of forecasted severe weather conditions and exceptionally high tides, which may pose significant risks, particularly along the seawall.
