Record Collector: what do users think?
Mike773 U
Mike773 U: Record Collector opened in Sheffield in 1978, and has sold vinyl records continuously for forty years. They have purchased vinyl collections from the public throughout that time, even when other vinyl shops closed or moved over to the CD format. Dedication to vinyl has enabled them to build a large and varied stock over many years, now numbering around 50,000 records. The store is now four times larger than the original shop was in 1978. This expansion enabled them to open the CD shop, containing 25,000 CDs. In December 2015, Record Collector hosted a pre-gig in-store autograph session with the legendary American hip hop group Public Enemy. The shop hit news and social media after the taxi booked to take Public Enemy to Sheffield Arena after the signing session failed to arrive. Sheffield photographer (and Record Collector regular) Kevin Wells was on the scene, and came to Public Enemy’s rescue by taking the group to the Arena in his Ford Focus! Kevin had nipped into the store for a quick autograph ahead of a busy night photographing other gigs across Sheffield. He said: “Public Enemy had a taxi booked for 6.30pm, but it drove off before the guys had finished signing autographs. People started panicking and looking for someone to drive, so I volunteered.” Putting his knowledge of the city’s back roads into action, Kevin began the ‘most surreal journey’ of his life. He drove the multimillionaires in his faithful Ford Focus. Kevin said: “They were such nice guys, we had a right laugh. We were chatting away, but the phone was constantly going as their management were clearly worried. Then as we were coming through Attercliffe, Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen, came on the radio. Everyone was singing the words and rocking out in the back of my car, it was like a Wayne’s World moment. I was looking in the rear view mirror thinking, ‘is this actually happening?’” He added: “We got to the arena about 15 minutes before they were due on stage. I drove up to security and said, ‘I’ve got the band in the back.’ They looked at me as if I was having them on, but then I rolled down the windows and Chuck D showed them the security pass. Amazing, it just didn’t feel real.” Kevin posted a selfie of Public Enemy in his car the following day, which was liked and shared hundreds of times online. Barry Everard, owner of Record Collector, said Public Enemy had contacted him the week before the show to arrange the signing. He said hundreds of fans braved the rain to turn up for the event. He said Public Enemy had been using taxis to get about as their tour bus is too large for smaller roads. Barry said: “Public Enemy were absolutely brilliant; such nice guys and they were great with the fans. Sometimes fame can ruin people, but it clearly hadn’t with them.” He added: “They are arguably the biggest act we’ve ever had in the store. It really was an honour to have them and I’m glad they made the show on time.” Urban Myths TV Show: In 2017, Sky TV announced a dramatized re-telling of the Public Enemy incident to be broadcast in 2018 as part of their Urban Myths series on Sky Arts. Urban Myths: Public Enemy (feat. Kev Wells) tells the story of how rap revolutionaries Public Enemy got stranded in Broomhill after their tour bus left without them, and they had to rely on a local bloke and his old Ford Focus to get them to their show on time. Starring Philip Glenister as Kev Wells, Paterson Joseph as Chuck D and Abdul Sallis as Flavor Flav. For this episode, the production team created a replica of the Record Collector shop-front and signage to feature in the show. Jason King: Popped into the shop today 19th March could of spent hours there , great selection of new and second hand vinyl , great prices too , came away with 4 vinyls very happy
Z Hunter
Z Hunter: Changing my original review where I called them needlessly rude based on an experience in the CD side of the shop (it's split into two virtually separate stores). In truth, the vinyl side of this shop is very nice, good selection of new stuff and the odd cool used find. The CD side, though, as big as it is, isn't much fun to navigate and, as I said in my first review, the guy that works there is a bit sneering and unpleasant. So yes to the vinyl bit, nay to the CD side.

Record Junkee: what do users think?
Peter O'Connell
Peter O'Connell: As ever RJ was great. Nothing to dislike here, except perhaps beer prices that are on the high side. Love their program tho, where else can bands play?
Robert Mccrudden
Robert Mccrudden: A Warren of records to browse, literally could spend a day here and stick jot have checked everything out. The guys in the shop are always on hand to help out and are very knowledgeable. Pop in and check it out.
Abbo Abbo (Abbottoir)
Abbo Abbo (Abbottoir): The place for gigs in Sheffield. Having more choice of drinks behind the bar would make it that much better! (non alcoholic too)
supplefluid
supplefluid: Great place to pick up vinyls and old CDs if your a music junkie well worth checking out
Katherine Rawson
Katherine Rawson: I went here to the venue upstairs for a gig. It was a great night and although the toilets were small, they were clean and well stocked for the evening.
Edmond DuFrais
Edmond DuFrais: Very dodgy place and the old man who looks like an alcoholic started screaming at me for asking perfectly reasonable questions. Very unprofessional, I would recommend you stay well away!
steve harris
steve harris: Brilliant venue for live bands, really friendly staff, great sound. Love it!
Georgia Leggott
Georgia Leggott: Myself and my partner have been in a couple of times and sadly the same rude man has meant we’ve left and purchased items from other independent music shops locally with much better service. The same guitar stand that’s available at other local stores brand new boxed for £14 was tried to be sold to us for £20 off display, damaged and in a very forceful way. Further to this each time my partner spoke he was repeatedly asked to repeat despite him clearly saying what he was looking for. Let’s just hope this is down to poor hearing and not racially profiling and backwards views. Would be very shameful to think the actions of following someone around a shop and not allowing them the room to browse (this is beyond trying to offer good service) and making subtle remarks. I’d also like to add I’ve visited the shop alone and not had the same experience which suggests a slight issue. Although it’s great to support independent businesses I’d consider looking at other local stores before spending your money here and question the views behind a business. I naively just hope that these numerous experiences are just ‘one offs’ and not a true representation of the business for their own sake. (I’m sure the response to this review won’t be kind either from the previous replies to poor reviews already online, already a red flag of poor service!)
Response: Hi, we are shocked and dismayed to read your review, you are making serious allegations here which are libellous, We have been in business since 1994 and have employed people of all persuations, added to this in our music venues we have hosted a wide variety of events from Reggae Festival through to Indian Holy Parties, Vietnamese club nights, LGBTQ nights and countless others.
Luke J Reevey
Luke J Reevey: Could not recommend this shop more- Dave was absolutely brilliant, helped me so much with what I was looking for (and was very patient despite my complete lack of knowledge). Will always be my go to record shop. If you need anything to do with records, instruments, microphones, etc (sound in general), then definitely go here!!! Super friendly, really cool shop, and all the help I could ask for :) Will be back again soon!
Leonid Dudakov
Leonid Dudakov: It's a nice place to buy a new instrument. The store worker was very nice, he handed me a tuner, said that I can pick up and try anything that I like and left me to it. I tried almost ten guitars at my own pace before settling on my final choice. It was a great experience.
Fred Guilbert
Fred Guilbert: Great shop and great vinyl range upstairs..
Debra Gillett
Debra Gillett: went in yesterday wont be bothering again was served by this surly middle aged couldnt crack a smile if his life depended on it bloke clearly had no people skills was patronising(possibly because im a woman???) need to sack this one
Simon Roberts
Simon Roberts: Great little Aladdin's Cave style music shop, great selection of instruments and amps downstairs. Upstairs large selection of vinyl and some CDs. Could have spent hours looking through them all, generally well organised, good selection of reasonably priced new and used vinyl and some rarer items with higher but competitive price tags. Held back and just bought one Queen and Adam Lambert EP this time but will be back.
Colin Linford
Colin Linford: Great venue
Robert Williams
Robert Williams: As a music venue it's fantastic, great bar and stage area, very cosy and great for live music

Theodoros Antoniadis: Amazing place, rare records from all eras and genres
mohammed kourat
mohammed kourat: Very good 👍
G Rusto
G Rusto: Great selection of records from all music genres (Alot with questionable high prices). Many of the preowned record selection have definitely seen better days, most i picked up and checked had mold/damp damage on them.
supplefluid
supplefluid: Great place to pick up vinyls and old CDs if your a music junkie well worth checking out
Summer Jade Dolan
Summer Jade Dolan: Went here to see a gig with some local bands. Bands performed well and drinks were okay value, but my partner was charged £2 for coat check, and when we went to retrieve his coat at the end of the night, it had been stolen. Lady who had been operating cost check up until an hour before was trying her best to be helpful but the man she referred my partner to for assistance literally ignored him and did nothing to help. Didn't even offer the £2 back. It was a cold night in mid December and my partner had no coat as a result. Ignored my message about it thus far despite me handing over the crime number given by the police. At a loss as to what we can do.
Dawnie Stilwell
Dawnie Stilwell: My favourite gig venue in Sheffield!
Abbo Abbo (Abbottoir)
Abbo Abbo (Abbottoir): The place for gigs in Sheffield. Having more choice of drinks behind the bar would make it that much better! (non alcoholic too)

David Chitty: Very cool Vinyl shop. So spotless! Very supportive of local bands and independent musicians!
Paul O'Farrell
Paul O'Farrell: Quality shop. Amazing selection of records. One of the best shops in the country
James Wilkes
James Wilkes: Incredible selection of records. The owner obviously knows his stuff and I would recommend any real fan of tangible music to give him their business. The shop has a very bare-bones feel with some smatterings of tasteful music art. Will definitely come here again and again in future.
Geoff Ticehurst
Geoff Ticehurst: Best record shop in Sheffield. Best shop in Sheffield! Superb collection of vinyl, brand new and secondhand. All competitively priced. Very friendly, informative, and most importantly knowledgeable, staff. Open on Sundays for a nice relaxed browse too. Love the in-store shows they put on as well. Absolutely all round top class place!
Grant Bucko
Grant Bucko: One of the best record stores in the UK.Travelled from Nottingham, visited a couple of times over the years and the selection is simply incredible every time, especially for my tastes - Ambient/Avant Garde/Electronic/Hip Hop.Out of print records that are simply sold out everywhere still chilling at Bear Tree waiting to be bought.Travelled to London the weekend before to end up buying very little.A gem of a store, really chill atmosphere and great customer service, on top of that the prices are always super reasonable.
Trev Wood
Trev Wood: Great service as always, always try to use independent record stores as opposed to Amazon.
Will Gordon
Will Gordon: Well worth a visit...Great range and some real gems
Nosmirk Official
Nosmirk Official: Far and away the best record store in Sheffield, actually my personal favourite record store overall - it's difficult to go in and come away empty handed as the variety of stock is absolutely huge.Worth noting they tend to do cashless unless you have exact money.

Andrew macdonald: fabulous.
Vegan Warrior
Vegan Warrior: Great signing event with Johnny Marr. Well organised and he had time to chat about everything and anything except we don't talk Smiths lol.Well done Bear Tree pat on the back for yourselves.
Z Hunter
Z Hunter: Reviewing the actual physical store. On one hand they do have a good and fairly priced selection, actually they beat most places on price. On the other hand, the place feels so sterile and soulless, it's how I imagine HMV would run an indie shop. The staff (usually the same guy) never seems to want to have a conversation or respond in more than one-word answers and you just don't get that fun record shopping experience that you might get elsewhere. Not a big deal to everybody but I always come away feeling a lot emptier than I should when buying vinyl.
Nick Ritchie
Nick Ritchie: Great vinyl record shop selling new and second hand albums and singles.
david poyton
david poyton: Fabulous choice. Super service and very reasonable prices. I will definitely be going back here.
Callum Grant
Callum Grant: Great selection. Well organised, only thing I didn't love about it is there were quite a few records listed as new but they were open/unsealed (almost everything here is new and sealed). If I am buying a new record it has to be sealed to be called new in my eyes.
Mon
Mon: I am yet to visit and leave empty-handed. Great independent store.
Elizabeth Webster
Elizabeth Webster: Thank you for the tickets,,to concert extra hours placed,,very helpful
Nick Hill
Nick Hill: Visited for first time today. Excellent selection of new vinyl, fairly priced. Polite, friendly service. Recommended.

They seem to get the best used stock, and they have a large new vinyl section. The owner is also willing to order in new albums specifically for you, which is increasingly rare nowadays, and their returns policy is reasonable. Would recommend!

Jordan Walker: Love this place. Great selection
Geoff Ticehurst
Geoff Ticehurst: Excellent shop. Great selection of used secondhand vinyl. Loads of new releases and a really good discounted sale section too. Online ordering really easy via the Discogs app and their own website too, with click and collect an option.
Paul Croucher
Paul Croucher: Knowledgeable and helpful staff, huge range of vinyl, new and old, all formats and genres. Great place for crate digging
David Fairey
David Fairey: Fantastic shop with some amazing records, especially for a Beatles fanatic like me.
Dan Jones
Dan Jones: Fairly mainstream range of titles catering for the trad rock dads, and with all new stock organised together rather than by genre it can be a bit arduous to dig through. It's a nice space though and good to see another independent record shop doing good business.

Dougal Scaife
Dougal Scaife: Perfect mix of new and second hand vinyl for audiophiles.
S Hen
S Hen: Managed to pick up a hard to find vinyl for not very much money. Great communication and prompt delivery. Could nae ask for any more. Top stuff.
Brett Clarke
Brett Clarke: Best vinyl shop around, be it online or in person, customer service is second to none. They also have a huge range of incredible value CDs to browse through in store too
james forrest
james forrest: Great place for new and 2nd hand vinyl they also have a large collection of 2nd hand cd's. They have a great sellection of audiophile pressings as well as Jazz, Blues,Rock and Soul. You can spend a couple of hours browsing their offerings and then go upstairs and get some sound advice on a system to play them on. Their Web site is easy to search for vinyl but not for CD's as they have far too many, carriage prices are very reasonable and they have fast delivery. Give them a try.
Andy Martin
Andy Martin: Very good and quick service, records well packaged and arrived clean so could be played immediately. Easy to order off website.
Daryl Pace
Daryl Pace: What a great place to shop for records new and second hand and second hand CD's, a great atmosphere and incredibly friendly and helpful staff, a joy to visit.
Seb Chapman
Seb Chapman: We love visiting Wax, my daughter bought her first vinyl there. A great selection of new and used records and CD's. Really friendly staff and a fabulous hi-fi shop upstairs. We've also bought a lot of vinyl via the Wax web site, it's always as described, well packaged and delivered quickly.
Phil Hancock
Phil Hancock: A natural progression for Moorgate to open a record shop. I’ve used Moorgate for years even though I live in Jersey. The record shop has a great selection of new and used, is a tremendous space and the staff gave the same great customer service ethos as ‘upstairs’. I’ve purchased in Wax before and asked them to post the vinyl as I’m flying with hand baggage only. They’re not far off being at my door before i am. If you mail order everything is well packaged. If you’re browsing in person you’re sure to pick up some gems. The 2nd hand CD selection gives you a sore neck but has some absolute belters at great prices. If I lived locally it would be a regular haunt. As it is I just visit when I can and look forward to it.
Steve Allen
Steve Allen: I’ve been a customer of Wax since it opened its doors, it’s a fabulous emporium that’s recently been upgraded with more racks of stock. It sells new and S/H Vinyl and S/H CD’sMy CD collection has grown by about a 1,000 over the last few years, the vast majority coming from Wax😎It’s a friendly place with fabulous staff, and the best bit is it’s located in the basement of Moorgate Acoustics which sells fabulous equipment to play your CD’s and vinyl on !!!!A must visit for anyone that’s serious about Music and Hi-Fi 😎🎼🎼🎼
Matthew Sayers
Matthew Sayers: I have used Wax on and off since they opened in 2019. A fantastic shop specialising in Rock, Indie and Americana. A friendly atmosphere great customer service. All records I have received in the post have been well packaged and promptly shipped.

Andy Cooper
Andy Cooper: Absolutely brilliant, only wish it was in my home town but fortunately the online service is excellent too. Latest purchase was 5 Kate Bush remasters at a great price. Ordered one morning and due to the order value sent at no further cost and received the very next day by DPD within the given hour slot.
Brian Morris
Brian Morris: A really super shop with great stock, very well priced compared to online retailers and fast service too.Never received a damaged item, lots of cheaper and more expensive records. I don’t live anywhere near but it’s my vinyl shop of choice.
mark yexley

Philip Kidger
Philip Kidger: I have been a regular customer at Wax since it opened almost 3 years ago, following my excellent experiences as a customer of Moorgate Acoustics HiFi.Genuine, honest and extremely customer oriented business who specialise in Audiophile vinyl, second hand and new vinyl.Great website for online orders and s/h vinyl gradings are genuine.Highly recommended 👌
Z Hunter
Z Hunter: I really want this record shop to succeed but so far it's only a decent visit (when they're actually open). It's a mixture of new and used stock, although the new stock isn't always in the best condition for some reason, and it's a bit random as to what they have, plus they don't seem to get the week's new releases in on time like most new stockists do. The used stuff is a good selection, and it's in decent condition. Just need to do more to promote that they exist, and decide if they really want to be a place for new records. It's always so empty that I'm worried it won't be around for very long.
Scott Wilson
Scott Wilson: Great record shop great selection old and new
graham phillips
graham phillips: Everything you need in vinyl and responsible priced to
Richard Barrett-Small
Richard Barrett-Small: Delighted to find this local record store. From a small neon lit entrance on a side street, you descend into a spacious basement—a very cool experience. Inside there’s a great range of vinyl from audiophile pressings to second hand. Found some great prices for new 180gm jazz as well.
