Sheffield Adult Autism And Neurodevelopmental Service: what do users think?

Kira: I was in the waiting list for autism for about 1.5 years. The process was handled very professionally and I was diagnosed autistic. I had no issues described by other patients. I hope that the department is listening to everyone and taking on board comments. My experience would suggest that they are.

Elizabeth Tetley: This service saved my life. I travel over an hour to get here, but it’s worth it, I have never received support like it. Dawn is phenomenal, so wonderful at what she does.
Jayne Connolly: Was diagnosed with autism after an 16 month wait. The service was excellent. The follow up session was also very good.
Osman Ahmed: I attended this clinic in February of this year and despite the long wait due to Covid, the team provided me with exceptional care and support. The first assessment I had with Rebecca was conducted in a friendly and professional manner, and she was an excellent listener and communicator. Her diagnosis was delivered with empathy and professionalism, and she also provided me with helpful information on how to deal with post-diagnosis feelings. The team at the desk, Thanks Tom and colleagues!, were quick to respond and always accommodating. Thanks to the care and support provided by this clinic, it was a turning point in my life. I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone who needs their services.
Luther Brown: Just went through the reviews on here. Multiple people have been waiting years for treatment - one person waited 5 years, which is absolutely disgraceful. Last I checked the waiting list on their website, it stated that they are only beginning to see patients who were referred in 2018.I personally have been waiting 3 years for a simple ADHD diagnosis. To say that people in my situation are in a predicament is an understatement. I would pay for a private diagnosis, but the NHS would not recognize it and prescribe me medication at the NHS rate; I would instead have to pay privately, which would amount to a 733% inflated medication price every month for decades, just so I can function normally.I'm tired of waiting and struggling, so I'm going to try the Psychiatry UK's "Right to Choose" scheme, as another reviewer has mentioned. I recommend others try it too.
Darren Lee: Had a couple of visits, it was a long waiting time to be seen but that's the mental health system in general, especially adult mental health services.I see Ruby and I feel heard and understood, she gives shiz and its been helping me.I am Autistic, diagnosed at the age of 30, had to change services due to moving areas and so far I am liking this one, parking needs a bit of attention but not their area to deal with.
hanner marie: Waited 5 years for an appointment. Finally got ONE. had said appointment and was told they could not help me because I was not "newly diagnosed" I argued with them and managed to get another appointment with a Psychologist who was lovely but also stated she could not help me....reception staff terrified me, didn't understand my need for my assistance dog and generally got frustrated with me because I couldn't communicate with them even though they work at an autism service and autism is a communication disability
Em Briddon: Spoken to several different staff members on the phone for progress updates on an assessment. Fantastic experience all around, very friendly, accommodating and helpful staff. Never had such a warm experience with a team of people. Thank you :)
Elizabeth Tetley: This service saved my life.I travel over an hour to get here, but it’s worth it, I have never received support like it.Dawn is phenomenal, so wonderful at what she does.
Sam Baker: Absolutely wonderful experience. A long wait to get here due to no fault of the staff and the first thing they did was apologise and tell me how they're trying to fix it! I didn't even ask!Everyone I spoke to was helpful, calm and just genuinely wonderfully understanding. I cannot understate how great my experience today was. I'm really thankful for all the hard work they are doing and I very much feel looked after and listened to. They have a very high level of knowledge in and around the subject of mental health and ADHD and they care. It really shows. If everyone who needed it could get this standard of care, the country would be in a far, far better place. Thanks, so much!
lily Parker: They made me wait nearly 9 months to hear back from my referral letter that was sent to them by the gp for them to tell me that I do not have adhd. I then went as I did not believe what they had said and felt they were just passing people off as they did not have the time for it. Once going private i was not only told I had adhd but told I have both types of adhd. Do not recommend going here and if you need help but your gp will only send you there tell your gp with the right to choose act that you go can go somewhere with a shorter waiting list as after doing this i was send to psychiatry uk who made me feel heard and were amazing throughout my treatment.
Kata Youn: Very inconsiderate reception staff. They clearly have issues with being underfunded with a 3yr waiting list. My GP said I scored very highly for ADHD, yet I was rejected for an assessment after waiting 4 months. The letter said a bunch of things that were not true! Both the letter and the receptionist made me feel gaslit about my own experiences. Overall a massive shame how badly they treat people. Reception staff need to learn how to talk to people in a professional and caring way.
Randeep Samra: To call this 'organisation' useless would be an understatement - from both my experience and apparently others on here, it is actively detrimental.I was referred to SAANS by my GP twice for ADHD. From having read this referral, it is a very clear referral for ADHD, but got rejected both times because it was for some unclear reason interpreted as an ASD referral and was rejected on the basis of not having enough information on my childhood. This process took months when I'm in urgent need of an ADHD diagnosis (and treatment). I am now seeking treatment elsewhere (I am using Psychiatry UK's "Right to Choose" scheme now), and only wish I was more aware of this from the beginning; had I done so, I may have already received my diagnosis and saved a great deal of time both attaining my diagnosis and consequent treatment which is necessary for me to do my PhD. I would strongly recommend other seeking an ADHD assessment to use this scheme instead of going through SAANS, and for those with ASD and dyspraxia to also use other routes which are available to them - ANY other route would be better than this.
Ciaran Hyland: Diagnosed me and then left me with no additional support. Contact with them is a challenge as they often just resort to offering a callback and then fail to do so.
Jemma Coleman: Reception staff are borderline abusive as others have said. I was told that actually I wasn't on the waiting list after I had DEFINTELY been referred by my GP over a year ago. I said I felt sucidal at hearing this, basically was told 'ok bye'. Great. I would get a private adhd diagnosis and pay thousands tomorrow if it would be accepted by the NHS, but they don't accept private diagnosis as part of shared care! So would have to pay private meds prices for life. Huge disgusting scam of disabled people, I hate the NHS and wish I could opt out.
Katie Barber: I didn't get my form for my assessment after diagnosis back in time. I'm autistic - part of the reason I need this assessment is because I struggle to do things like this and have zero support. I've been on this waiting list for almost 2 years. The lady who called me up to tell me that I am being removed from the waiting list completely and will need to be added to the waiting list from scratch (so wait another 1.5 years) was unceremonious and didn't ask if I was in a good place to receive some of the worst, most destroying, devastating news. I was crying in the middle of the street completely alone, unable to cope after being told not only have I been mistreated by the medical system for such a long time - I will now continue to go without support for at least another year. I felt suicidal, I told the lady this and she scoffed "you've had *5 weeks* to complete this". I have been offered ZERO advice or support after being made to wait even longer. The lady on the phone was inhuman, robotic and completely unconcerned by my distress. I feel so traumatised by this experience I am now no longer engaging with any services about this matter. It feels like they are intentionally trying to reduce the waiting list, rather than improving their systems. They don't care that that destroys peoples lives.
Daniel Pallordet: Having autism, I went to SAANS for a reassessment of needs but, unfortunately, there were multiple issues with the assessment. The person allocated to carry out the assessment was a speech and language therapist, despite the fact that I have no needs in this area - they had access to my records - but I have significant needs in other areas, such as mental health, so I really needed to see a psychologist. Throughout the meeting, the assessor let me tell her what my needs were, but she never asked probing questions to find out whether my own assessments of my own needs was correct. This assessor only had a basic understanding of autism. Although she knew about the basic characteristics, she was unable to apply and adapt her knowledge to my case in particular. For instance, she was unable to rephrase questions so that I would understand them, which revealed a lack of understanding of the ways in which autistic people communicate differently from the norm. Throughout the meeting, she and I were not on the same wavelength. Communication did not go through well, and the assessment completely failed to provide me with clarity - on the contrary, it increased my confusion. The assessor clearly did not understand the issues around camouflaging and masking: she couldn't believe I was usually fidgeting most of the time because she hadn't seen me do so during the meeting! She encouraged me to go back to another service that has been abusive to me in the past. She put me through a test (to find out whether I have ADHD as well as autism) without giving any indication as to whether this test was suitable for autistic people. I could go on... There are also issues with the fact that the service insisted in phoning me repeatedly prior to the assessment and would not use any other means of contact. Also, it was made clear to me that no further services would be available after the assessment. I am still having to deal on my own with all my problems, including mental illness and others, as has unfortunately always been the case because of the lack of services. SAANS do not have the level of expertise that is reasonable to expect from a specialist service.
Christopher Ecclestone: I can't speak highly enough of my experience with Sheffield's Autism service. After having a dreadful experience with Wakefield's service, I was referred here and it was like a different world. From speaking with the people on reception, to Frances and Jasmin, who did my assessment, everyone was helpful and friendly, and made the whole process feel like a collaboration to find the answers to my problems, as opposed to my Wakefield experience which felt like I was on trial. This was ultimately a life transforming experience, and I'm grateful to everyone there.Thank you!
Adam Fitzsimons: Having autism i was only told to fill a questionnaire out not that the questionnaire would date back to new born so I'd need a parent/ guardian to help fill it in considering in times where we cant go and see other people n when questioned they'll just put the phone down and ignore you

Ferham Clinic: what do users think?
Jami-Lei Slater: My first experience here was negative but after persisting I've developed a good relationship with majority of people I've seen here. I received a diagnosis from a psychiatrist who specialises in my disorder, attended very informative group therapies and even had one to one support in my interview with a PIP assessor. My only gripe is the first appointment I had here and the occasional lack of available duty workers towards 5pm but the latter I can forgive and the former has surprised other staff I've mentioned it to so hopefully how I was treated then wasn't the norm. I'm glad to be under the care of Ferham Clinic now
Ashley Whitehead: Sadie, the main consultant is vile! My first appointment she was towering over my, shouting at me! My prescriptions are always days late. When I call and explain they wind me up, then send me letters threatening to withdraw treatment! They also discuss my treatment with other patients in the waiting room! Disgusting staff!
Sam Crompton: They don’t listen to you and simply want you off of the system and out of their hands, complete waste of time. Dehumanising and insensitive, I’ve had more meaningful conversations with homeless people than I have with these licensed medical professionals. My advice if your given the opportunity to get a diagnosis here is to refuse it on the grounds that they are incompetent and you do not have faith in their system. I honestly wish I had never even gone
Elly J: I'm giving them a one star as yet again they have failed me and most likely others however I'm going to take action agasint this and not give up they put me on emotion coping skills group but discharge me without giving me my counseling I was promised most of the therapy workers hear dont have a bloody clue had no support really of them they just wanna say what thru want
Michael Tyas: Tired of this place trying to get to see a psychiatrist on a regular basis to get a diagnosis seems to be an impossibility seems that will only happen if you are put in Swallownest hospital where a psychiatrist can see you on a regular basis otherwise you have no chance of getting a real investigation done or a real diagnosis. This mental health service is reactive at best they are not proactive so you will not get any real help. The staff thinks everyone are malingerers it makes it so much easier for them to not really help anyone. GOOD LUCK if you ever have to deal with this service you will need it.I just need to add to this post I have paid for my partner to see a psychiatrists privately and they diagnosed her with four different mental illnesses something the the mental health services here in Rotherham failed to do after having the past ten years to do so. I will of course be making a complaints after having been through P.A.L.S already which was pointless. Just to add on to this a little more when I tried to make a complaint to the patient safety and investigation team at RDASH my numerous voicemails (because thy do not answer phone) and emails have been ignored. So i have tried to report it to the NHS ombudsman and he said nothing they can do they investigate themselves guess nothing cam be done then disgusting.
Tracey Charlesworth: A waste of time if you are looking for help. The social worker has very little time and will not help you even when you're suicidal. The whole place is totally unacceptable and I wouldn't bother about it.
S: I would like to say a massive thank you to the consultant and staff members at this clinic. From my initial diagnosis till date they have supported me by sending my medication to the pharmacy (sometimes at short notice) - and during the festive period ,rescheduling appointments where they haven't fit with my commitments and generally being available to speak to. I have called to ask for some documentation as evidence to support my condition and the lady immediately printed the documents to send them off/ rearranged my appointment. You have had a massive impact on the quality of my life and for that I am extremely grateful
Beverley Clarke: Totally let my daughter down to the extent that she ended her own life aged just 21 .as previous been under mental health myself discharged wrongly and referred to this clinic they sent me a copy of my discharge letter from the previous place and refused a referral from someone I had spoken to who said I needed help and support .they refused my referral and I've been left with no support by anyone after they killed my daughter .there lack of care resulted in my daughters suicide so they left me with no care then as a result no support I am seriously wanting to end my life after another traumatic experience
Marie Wilkes: Failure after failure. The staff themselves play mind games with you. If I could leave this service I would. Absolute shambles. Disgrace!
dawn shipley: I have found them very experienced and always there for me through thick andunder the phone for any advice or everything I'd like to find come all from the bottom of my heart thank you for what you've all done Gary and carol with my dad and the young onset dementia for being there at the hard times thank you Sophie
Johnny Action: Total waste of time. It’s taken twenty six years to get a referral and one diagnosis and virtually no help. In fact one of the so called health professionals even suggested to me, the best ways of committing suicide.
Gooders “Gooders” Pitman: Terrible, it’s taken me twenty six years to get a diagnosis. So what does that say about mental health services, you decide.
Adam Gordon: Absolute DISGRACE! Had to go to PALS for repeated failures, taking legal action against Ferham clinic for breaches of care!! SEE YOU IN COURT!
Racheal McCallum: I've been under their care for a year. I've yet to see psychiatrist, yet they were happy enough to prescribe me a very high dose of an antidepressant that I need constant monitoring on as it can cause abnormalities in your heart. I've only just had an ECG for this because my GP sent me for one. I'm also on another antidepressant so I need monitoring to ensure I don't develop serotonin syndrome. They should have on my file that I cannot tell over the phone, yet they constantly phone me and refuse to speak to my mum who I've said can speak on my behalf multiple times. They have no duty of care what so ever. I'm lucky enough to be receiving psychotherapy and my therapist for that is lovely and does care. But the rest of the staff couldn't give a flying toss about you and will happily point the blame at you rather than admitting their faults. Its an absolute joke of a place.
Steve Hoyland: I've been a patient at Ferham for several years. I suffer from Paranoid Schizophrenia. As time goes by, they've contacted me less and less - It's a case of "Just keep taking the tablets" (of which there are many). I've not seen a psychiatrist In over a year. The only time I get an appointment Is every six months for a heart trace, so they can make sure they aren't killing me (for their own protection of course, not mine), although they completely refuse to discuss my concerns regarding the multiple side-effects from which I suffer, after many years of taking several high-dose anti-psychotics and other mind-bending drugs, all of which are, apparently, for short-term use only. They've made me rely on these drugs, never warned me of any side effects, and have now simply 'left me to It'. My major symptoms have returned, Indeed worsened, and I experience things which I never did before; my wife and I are convinced this Is because of the medication, but we can't be sure, because there's nobody to help or discuss these matters with. Every single recommendation by N.I.C.E, regarding the treatment of mental health patients, seem to be Ignored by Ferham clinic.
Vix B: Still waiting on someone phoning me back from 2+weeks ago. Have witnessed staff intimidating patients, one turned out to be my therapist... great introduction. Liars, leave work early without cancelling the appointments with patients first and leave patients to find out after they waste time and money coming to the appointment that wont be happening. I was left for 2 years with inappropriate therapy so by time it came to my EMDR, too much time had passed and too many things had happened for them to consider it effective. Been criticised by staff for my memory problems which is part of my health conditions so feel very discriminated against and a snotty apology was expected to be enough. Refuse to phone me back about the discrimination I suffered. Apparently discharging me means they dont have to face the discrimination i faced. Convenient. Worst mental health team ever. Making patients worse. Suicide rates are on these idiots and their inability to do their job properly.
Craig Jeffs: Just plain awful dont listen to you. I wish i could give zero stars because that is all they deserve.
Jess Haywood: I am currently a patient at this so called 'mental health team'. I have two different personality disorders which I have only recently been diagnosed with. They left me under their care for 2 years before I got to see a psychiatrist, they left me knowing that I was struggling with self harm and suicide. I was diagnosed in January 2019 and by March 2019 they STILL had NOT decided on my medication so I was left over 2 months without any medication. It is almost 6 months later and they STILL CANNOT decide on a treatment method for me because I have 2 conflicting personality disorders and each team have said that I am not right for them and their treatment. It's bad enough struggling with your mental health but then the people who are meant to help you are saying they can't. I can honestly say this team have made me seriously ill, I have had suicide attempts and self harm issues along with serious psychological damage because of there 'care'. I am at a point where I am debating going to the papers as I have followed the NHS procedures of speaking to PALs but conveniently no one rings you back.
Nicole Denman: If i could mark zero I would. My partner is supposed to be supported by this clinic. Ha! Next joke they are the most useless Mental Health team I've ever met. They dont give a crap about their patients and speak to them like they are a piece of rubbish.
Deirdre Staniland: Poor service!!!. Called around 40 times over 2 days and number on letter was today constantly engaged and yesterday and answerphone!!!. Now found totally different number on line and it's shut earlier that it should do!!!
Tee Jay: Rotherham mental health services has delivered a consistently poor service for as long as I remember. It doesn’t set to change anytime soon. You get put on a waiting list to receive unhelpful treatment. If any researcher is wanting to understand why the suicide rates are so high for Rotherham, and Rotherham in particular is at a record high then take a look at the not fit for purpose mental health services.

carly griffiths: I worked with Chloe in a SEN school therapy team, supporting children aged 9-14, who have a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD. She worked both one to one and in groups. Chloe built up great trust with the children and was able to support them in their developments, whilst they engaged in the innovative and creative sessions she provided. The young people were able to express themselves creatively in a safe space and reflect upon who they were, the support they needed and the support they wanted. Chloe used her experience and knowledge to also support class staff in transferring the therapeutic approaches into the class room, thus providing the young people with a truly holistic approach.
Megan Elliott: Chloe has worked with a few of my students within an ASD provision. One in particular needed help with releasing emotions appropriately, and Chloe was able to encourage this is in a safe, yet creative way. I saw a huge improvement in the way he was then able to communicate his emotions, and the way he felt within himself. Chloe created spaces in which he had the opportunity to express his thoughts and feelings, which were highly effectively. He would tell me how Chloe was one of the only people who truly understood him, and how much he enjoyed their sessions. He got a lot ouf of them! Chloe was always highly professional and her passion for helping children shines through. I would highly recommend Chloe!
Amy Wilkins: I am a Speech and Language Therapist who received creative supervision from Chloe. She helped me work through challenges in my educational setting by giving me different view points and things to think about. Chloe uses different methods and mediums to explore ideas and relationships. I always find supervision highly valuable and would recommend Chloe as a supervisor.

DETOMASO DADDONCASTER: Despite Joint Parental Responsibility for my child by way of Court Order social worker will only speak to Mother and not Father. This is unlawful
Gemma Lane: Won't refer my 13 year daughter although she desperately NEEDS it, no face to face consultation or anything, just talked to my daughter for 5 minutes on the phone and clearly didn't take in a word I said about her and things she's doing. They said there can't be a referal at this time and may be in the future! so I'm having to chase it up again with this place, absolutely disgusting. Very fast to get back in touch but not to help!!
