The Rutland Hotel: what do users think?
gemma hicks: Had a lovely 2 night stay the staff are so welcoming and friendly and go above and beyond to help big compliments to the lovely lady who is there for breakfast before she does the house keeping rooms are very clean and tidy the only complaint would be the toilet in the room is to close to the wall and a little high other that that nothing to complain about lovely stay
Philip Barbrook: It was fine. 2 nights, comfy bed, quiet room, good location. Good valueNearby activities: Good choice of pubs and cafés nearbyRooms: 3/5|Service: 4/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Great value …More
Simon Morris: Quirky hotel with nice rooms. Fairly handy for the University, which is why I was visiting. Bit of a walk (30 minutes) for downtown or the train station.Rooms: 4/5|Service: 4/5|Location: 3/5 …More
Paul Neale: The standard rooms are among the worst designed and maintained hotel bedrooms and ensuites I have ever stayed in, and the larger rooms are not much better. It feels like the hotel did not consult or use professional designers or fitters when they were converted to en suites or last refitted (must have been years ago). The bathrooms are very small and have no storage or flat surfaces for any kind of toiletries beyond a toothbrush. The mixer taps are basically a lottery as to what temperature water they will dispense, making a shower feel like an unnecessarily stressful experience. It genuinely looks like whoever specified and designed the layout of the bathrooms never intended for them to be used by anybody other than a small child, as the toilets are often wedged in tiny spaces or asymmetrically installed such that they are impossible to use sitting down.(These design or build faults are not due to the small room size but some other inexplicable decision making that seems entirely avoidable.)None of the rooms I stayed in have had air conditioning installed, so the best you can hope for in the summer is a working window and a desk fan (possibly aided by the bathroom's extractor fan, if that works). Some rooms had faulty heating which was either permanently on full blast or not working at all.Every bedroom appears to have some kind of mood lighting installed in the headboard as an up lighter, but they never work (despite having various switch panels available to flick on and off pointlessly). Other bedside light fittings can be quite treacherous in their condition of repair and I feel like an electrical safety inspection would have them condemned.Any external architectural charm entirely evaporates once you get inside. The wider hotel is made up of several very old buildings cheaply cobbled together by various narrow corridors, staircases and tacked-on walkways, so has terrible accessibility as a result.Room numbering and navigation inside the hotel is poorly signposted, and tricky at best once you enter the maze. The floors are all creaky and the whole hotel is in dire need of refurbishment. Many rooms have huge, dominating and tastelessly ill advised wall art staring down at you, and in a bizarre twist of soft furnishing mayhem, a huge draft-excluder installed as a full width cushion on the beds. (That sort of thing might have worked conceptually in the very largest of rooms, but the majority of standard rooms are too small for such frivolities and they simply get in the way when you want to use the room as a place to sleep or work!)You might be wondering why I have stayed there so often considering how bad it is? Well it's not for the low prices, because they are inexplicably high and not justifiable on any grounds I can think of. Even the on site parking is extra! If it was up to me, I would not stay in this hotel again, despite some of the staff being quite helpful (if you can find them). Its geographical location is this business's only saving grace, being a short walk away from the Children's hospital, University of Sheffield campus, Broomhill area and Sheffield Botanical Gardens, and about 10-15 minutes' walk down the hill into town proper.Rooms: The standard rooms are among the worst designed and maintained hotel bedrooms and ensuites I have ever stayed in, and the larger rooms are not much better. Jayne Williams: Pleasant stay, room modern and clean. Staff helpful, good parking and location good for West Street
Penny Lane: We only spent one night. The staff was very friendly and helpful and our room was perfectly fine for one night. The price was too high but because of the Arctic Monkeys gig we didn't expect anything else. The rooms was small and the window didn't close properly which was fine because of the mild weather. The bed was comfortable, the tv quite big and we got some Tea, coffee and biscuits as well as some soap and body wash. The bathroom looked relatively new and was clean but the modern open shower made it impossible not to flood the bathroom. All in all we slept well and would Return for a lower price.
Frankie Lamberts: It’s an okay hotel. The price is way too steep in my opinion. It’s all okay… nothing bad really but it’s all just the bare minimum. The staff is friendly enough and the beds are fine. It’s just the little details like: a barely functioning AC, no soapes, holes in the walls, loose toilet seats and a overal passé and dusty appearance. The bar and lobby are empty because they look un inviting. For this kind of money you can probably find a way nicer hotel. Unless it was haunted… but unfortunately I had no experience like that. So great hotel if it was haunted (and you’re into that because it looks like it could be) or cheap. But unfortunately it’s neither
Sean Kelly: Very handy to Sheffield children's hospital, only about 10 mins walking distance.Rooms: 4/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Great value …More
Andrew Hindle: A good old fashioned hotel. Comfortable rooms and attentive staff. A good value stay.
Mikki Storey: Just tired and run down. Staff were all very friendly though.Rooms: 2/5|Service: 3/5Hotel highlights Great value …More
Nigel Holmes: Room as expected for the price. Clean and had everything we needed and a good place to stay for visiting the hospital as only a 5 minute walk away. Slept well, comfy bed.
Janette Ryan: Very basic and tired hotel. There’s no space to put anything in the bathroom, no fridge, no toiletries (no soap or shower gel), no glasses or water, no tissues, not enough power sockets and only a small TV. The heater was off so the room was cold and the bathroom heater didn’t work. The door didn’t lock properly and the basin was a bit blocked so it kept making gurgling noises. The breakfast wasn’t very good quality, the scrambled eggs were tasteless, covered in black pepper and so watery I had to drain the water off into a bowl. The staff were very nice though and the bed was comfortable
Peter Page-Mitchell: Helpful staff and excellent breakfast.Rooms: 4/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 4/5Hotel highlights Quiet …More
NEIL CHURCHER: Great hotel to explore Sheffield in a good location, very comfortable beds and a very good breakfastRooms: 4/5|Service: 4/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Great value …More
Big D: Very basic and dated. Staff were faultless though and I bet a little bit embarrassed working in such a hovel. Avoid if you can.Rooms: 2/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 2/5 …More
Max M: AMAZING bed, but apart from that I would say it is a 3 star hotel not 4 star.Good points:A good hairdryer and fan was provided, several large mirrors, blackout curtains, TV worked, great location, very quiet night’s sleep (apart from the people walking past), clean enough, warm and fresh bed, temperature controllable rooms, excellent heated towel rail, room window opened, nice staff, and one of the two very small car parks had spaces when we arrived at 3pm on a Friday.Negatives:Had to wait a long time for breakfast and there seemed to be only one really hard-working nice lady doing everything (taking orders, clearing tables, bringing out food), not worth £10. No water or hot water for the tea bags. We drove 10 minutes to a better (and cheaper) place the next day - Grindleford Station Café.I wore flip-flops in the shower because the floor felt greasy, and there was mould on the sealant and dirt in the drain which would have been easy to clean off. Dirty limescale-encrusted shower head & water pressure not great. Water from bathroom tap tasted strongly of chlorine but could just be the city water. Dowels left in the wall - just need removing and filling to look better. My friend found a big silverfish scuttling around. Extractor fan did not work so bathroom stayed damp for hours. Heard one lady complaining that she had a cold shower, and one of our party said the shower temperature kept changing while using it. To be expected in an old hotel but not ideal.Only 2 small and flimsy toilet rolls given for 2 nights and no tissues. In room 69 whenever someone walks past outside it makes the bed shake & is loud so wakes you up with a start, but people do not walk past that often so it wasn’t a big problem. Found half a chocolate bar etc under the bedside table. Decor a bit random including dodgy painted plywood to surround the window/curtains. Room a bit dark and one of the bedside lights buzzed loudly when in use. Would have been nice to have some soft/yellow lighting to create a relaxing atmosphere before bed instead of harsh white lights. The chair had a smear of blood on it.My friend said his bed had a big uncomfortable dip in the mattress, but this had gone by the next night, so possibly just because some heavier people had stayed in it the night before we arrived?I probably wouldn’t stay here again.
Kate Tandy: Absolutely perfect. Lovely, quiet room in an interesting hotel with lots of character. Was staying a couple of nights for treatment at Hallamshire Hospital, so was literally 5 minutes walk away - perfect. Will definitely think about returning for a break away in future.Rooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Luxury, Great view, Quiet, Great value …More
Will TM: Could be better but customer service is poorRooms: 4/5|Service: 3/5|Location: 4/5Hotel highlights Quiet …More
