The founding club in the southern region of England for Shotokan Karate. Sensei Dewey has been either a student or the instructor here since the late 60’s early 70’s. It is without fear of contradiction that it can be said any club you currently train at in the south was probably started by Sensei Dewey. Clubs as far afield as Petersfield, Brighton, Chichester, Sandhurst, Winchester, Billingshurst to name a few. Clubs like Portchester, University of Portsmouth, South Downs, Paulsgrove. Havant and many others all were started by Mick and passed on to other instructors as they became qualified. In fact it could be said had Mick been shrewder and franchised his model he could spend more time relaxing in the sun.

The current Portsmouth Karate Club still has Sensei Dewey teaching mainly on a Thursday, Sensei Stacey Crowe 6th dan teaches on Tuesdays and generally looks after the club in terms of registration and student administration. The club is still at the Portsmouth Academy in Fratton opposite St Faith’s Church where it has been through all the name changes of the school and since it moved from the first Portsmouth dojo at the Southsea Community centre. Lessons are on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s with the Junior club being first from 6.30pm. Adult classes start at 7.30pm.

The Shotokan of England Karate Union was founded by Sensei Mick Dewey in 1982. Originally named the South of England Karate Union, a change to Shotokan of England Karate Union was necessary when some northern English clubs joined. In 1984, due to the Unions growth, Mick Dewey invited his friend Dave Hazard (Hazard was a regular visiting instructor at Brighton Shotokan) to join as technical director of the SEKU. The HQ (Hombu) dojo for SEKU is Portsmouth Karate Club where Mick teaches to this day having begun teaching there in 1972. Mick and Phil Elliott founded many clubs around the south of England and in fact in his own words every karate club in the south of England currently owes its roots to the Portsmouth dojo and SEKU.

Through 1980s and 1990s Imi Entrusted eyal with the task of continuing the development of Krav Maga as a comprehensive technical and tactical system. In 2010 Eyal Formed Krav Maga Global (KMG) and established Krav Maga as one of the most effective and recognised self defence systems by security services and civilians Worldwide.
