4worldlovers: The Hobbitty House with its chunky log walls and wonky, grass-covered roof sits by the pond and the veg patch in Amanda’s garden, and its location just up from the house is no coincidence.

It’s been the owner Amanda’s favourite spot for years, mostly because of her Auntie Annie, who often worked among the trellises and plants, singing as she went.


First the idea was a bench, then an arbour and then an octagonal summerhouse, but none of them seemed enough.


A small inheritance after Annie’s passing sparked an idea, and a carpenter friend was engaged to make “something” out of reclaimed tree trunks from the nearby Fawsley Estate.


Soon, farmers passing on the nearby road would stop and offer turf or wildflowers for the roof, and the quaint space slowly took shape.

Amanda has kept the space simple but amazing, with rugs over the rough stone floor, bright Indian patterns on the sofa beds and lighting from strings of fairylights, bunches of lanterns and the wood-burner.


A unique hobbitty house that went from a view, to a bench, to a community project and finally a magical retreat for two just outside Northampton.

There's so much to do and explore within walking distance of the Hobbitty House. Lots of waterside and country walks; there are two lovely woodlands within a 4 mile drive - the bluebells in May are amazing, a carpet of blue!

Dodford still has an open ford which kids can paddle in. The canal is nearby, offering a peaceful stroll whilst the narrow boats sail past.

Alternatively, Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum is perfect to grab a bite to eat at the canal side pubs before heading off on a canal boat ride.

Woodpiece Cottage is a luxurious holiday cottage situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Northamptonshire. It was awarded a 5-star and Gold Award rating by “Visit Britain” (previously the English Tourist Board)in autumn 2014, although we are no longer subscribing to this service. While only an hour and a half from central London the cottage is extremely secluded and is perfect for those seeking a quiet break where the only sounds at night come from nature.


The Cottage, once a farm building, has been beautifully converted; it is stylish and comfortable and makes the ideal base for your rural stay.

The front door leads into the fully equipped kitchen. All kitchen surfaces are granite. There is a Rayburn and an electric cooker, as well as the usual fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and drier, magimix, and toaster, in fact all you would expect in order to cook anything you might like.

Traditional materials have been used in the cottage, such as oak wood for the floors and sheep’s’ wool for insulation. There are two double-bedded rooms upstairs, each with its own ensuite bathroom.

In addition to the kitchen, the downstairs features a spacious sitting room and a bathroom (with a large shower). The sitting room has a TV with DVD player, books, sofa and a sofa-futon. Though the cottage has central heating throughout there is also a wood-burning stove for cosy evenings in.

There is a small enclosed garden with herbs and fruit, and a paved terrace, with table and chairs.
