Newcastle Innovation Centre is working on developing a mathematical model of a complex chemical reaction system and its control. The Modelling & Simulation group at Newcastle Technical Centre is offering a 12-month Postdoctoral placement starting as soon as possible.
In this role candidates will:
• Apply sound science and engineering principles to develop further a mathematical model of a complex unit operation involving transport phenomena, thermodynamics and reaction engineering.
• Design experimental tests to de-couple relevant physical/chemical phenomena and combine mechanistic and empirical models to obtain robust predictive models.
• Integrate molecule-based models within more traditional chemical system models.
As a full member of the team, you will have ownership for your projects, leading the development of the models and the design of the experiments required to provide data into the models. You will have the opportunity to present your work to Senior Management and work... within professional and entrepreneurial cross-functional teams in one of the company's major business categories. Corporate and specific job trainings will be provided to accelerate your development. You will be given increased levels of responsibility based on your proven capability to produce outstanding results.

Qualifications
Requirements (skills/experiences) for the role:
• A PhD in chemical engineering with a strong background on mass/heat transfer phenomena, thermodynamics (e.g. sorption isotherms, phase equilibria, activity coefficients), surfactant colloidal science, chemical reaction kinetics, dynamic simulation, process optimization and control.
• It is required to have an advanced knowledge in the use of gProms Dynamic process simulation software (or a similar one such as Aspen plus/Hysys) together with knowledge in Matlab/python.
• Experience with Design of Experiments and a range of approaches to fit experimental data and carry out parameter selection including polynomial models, mechanistic models and machine learning models.

The role
The second line of defence Credit Risk team (that’s us!) provides support to our colleagues in Borrowing and Finance to help Monzo grow safely. We’re looking for someone (maybe you?) to help ensure the models we use are not only good for Monzo but what's best for our customers.
You Will
• Perform independent model validation as part of our second line of defence Credit and Prudential Risk teams and making sure the credit... and financial risk models are fit for purpose
• Improve the IFRS9 Operating Model and Framework, challenging provisioning adequacy, validating IFRS9 models and building governance and controls around the framework
• Improve Model Risk Framework including policies, standards and procedures helping to embed best practice in the business. Making sure it follows up-to date regulatory guidelines and it is relevant for modern modelling techniques
• Write clear and impactful model validation reports and present the findings in relevant committees

The role in a nutshell:

Providing statistical expertise to inform the discussion between Model Development and Model Risk Oversight in the model build and model review process
Data manipulation and extraction - ability to understand and write code and extract appropriate data from a variety of sources
Generating model validation reports
Giving independent assurance to the Bank's Senior Management over the output and use of Models and ensure they are built and operating to internal and external regulatory standards. Where models are less than "fit for purpose", raising appropriate actions to bring about their remediation.
Providing subject matter expertise and owning any query raised by internal stakeholders of all levels including Senior Management
Continuous learning and developing of a best practice modelling culture within the bank
To be successful you'll need to bring:
Experience of statistical model development and/or model validation
Superb analytical skills and love to work with data and statistical models
Good knowledge of analytical tools such as Excel and ideally SAS
Excellent ability to understand technical models
Excellent data interpretation and presentation skills
Brilliant report writing skills, ideally for a Model Risk Committee or equivalent
We'd like you to have (but not essential):
Good knowledge of Credit Risk Modelling (e.g. PD, EAD and LGD models). Alternatively, a good knowledge of Financial models, or Banking Book Pricing models, or of Operational Risk models, or of Banking Book Stress Testing models. Or knowledge of methods such as regression modelling
