In this role, you’ll
• The generation and evaluation of antibodies and or detection methodologies for use in vitro diagnostic (IVD) assays for use in cancer diagnosis in manual and automated staining systems.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Context
PulmoBioMed Ltd. is a Northumbria University spinout company seeking to commercialise a novel exhaled breath aerosol collection device called PBM-HALE. The breath aerosols collected using this device contain, inter alia, viable microbes and their constituents (genomic material, proteins, metabolites, etc.), and biochemical biomarkers of physiology and disease. The company requires a Senior Biologist with relevant molecular bioanalytical science expertise who can work closely with the engineering team to contribute to the iterative development of the company's products. The company will use and develop modern ‘omics methods for the robust and reproducible bioanalysis of exhaled breath aerosol contents, particularly the microbial bioanalytes.
Dimensions
The company is a small enterprise and is expanding headcount to undertake the work associated with the development of PBM-HALE, with a principal interest in the field of the respiratory microbiome. The company founder and chief scientific officer, also line managing this position, is the only current company employee experienced in the techniques and methods associated to the bioanalysis of exhaled breath aerosol samples. The R&D team now needs strengthening to resource the work required to continue device development.
Key personal attributes
The post holder will have hands-on, independent experience in advanced microbiological and molecular bioanalytical methods, ideally qPCR and next generation sequencing, to work on collecting and analysing both simulated and human volunteer low biomass breath samples. Their natural attention to detail and meticulousness will be preferably supported by experience or training in a regulated industrial or clinical setting, to support data generation for high quality research as well as regulatory submissions and SOP development. They must be willing and able to continuously grow existing bioinformatic and statistical know how in potentially unfamiliar areas to become field experts in this emerging discipline.
Principal accountabilities
1. To plan, manage, and execute personal day-to-day laboratory and computational research activities as directed by the line manager.
2. To organise, manage, and undertake primary and secondary data collection, for example, the preparation and quality control of custom materials and the preparation, setting up, and execution of wet and computational experiments as necessary, including sample collection from human research study participants.
3. To ensure that work is recorded meticulously, and that all experimental procedures, calculations, sample and data processing, and results are written up daily using the established company standard operating procedures and platforms at the required standards.
4. To analyse experimental data, contribute to the authoring of research reports, presentations, regulatory submissions and external publications, and to prepare research outputs, papers, and intellectual property documentation in accordance with company policies.
5. To report, suggest solutions, and resolve problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines, including procurement and project-related equipment maintenance, under direction from the line manager.
6. To regularly summarise and present research outcomes to colleagues, internal and external project team members, and key stakeholders, under the line manager’s direction and supervision.
7. To work efficiently with project partners through direct communication or travel and on-site visits as required towards achieving timely progression to agreed milestones.
8. To participate in and contribute to relevant internal and external meetings in an open, positive, constructive, and collaborative manner.
9. Our current microscopy techniques include fluorescence, laser capture, polarised light, confocal and infra-red microscopy, with an expectation of significant future investment. In addition, we have numerous subject-specific research projects on image analysis using drones-based cameras, multispectral cameras, and photogrammetry. The Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE) is a £8M initiative between Northumbria and Newcastle Universities funded by Research England’s Extending Excellence in England (E3) scheme.
