Traditional London dishes

A typical English menu offers a fairly standard dining option. However, reading up on unfamiliar dishes and ingredients often gets lost and you never know what to order. With this mini-guide you will discover the typical dishes of the English tradition, and you will learn that in London you don't only eat Fish and Chips!

Full English Breakfast

For the British it is the main meal of the day, as lunch usually includes only a quick snack. The English breakfast is served in practically all cafes, restaurants and pubs open in the morning. The English breakfast is perfect to start the day full of energy! Many people think that eating savoury in the morning is strange ... if you also have this prejudice we invite you to try it, we are sure you will change your mind!

Fish & Chips

It is perhaps the most famous dish in English cuisine. Served as early as the 19th century, it was widespread among the English working class. Fish fillets, fried in a batter of flour and beer. The choice usually includes cod (cod), haddock (haddock, similar to cod but fatter), plaice (plaice), skate (skate) always accompanied by chips, creamed peas (mushy peas) and tartar sauce (a mayonnaise with tarragon and cucumber). A quicker alternative to fish and chips is the fish stick sandwich: leftover fried fish served between two slices of white bread.

Sausages and Mash (or Sausages and Mash)

Literally sausage and mashed potatoes. The meat is mainly pork, but many pubs and restaurants offer wild boar sausages. Not to be missed is gravy, a reduction of meat and vegetable stock, to pour on the plate.

The traditional pie

Stuffed shortcrust pastry pies, served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. It is a unique dish among the most traditional ones, appreciated since the time of the Roman Empire. The classic fillings are Steak and Kidney (small pieces of beef and kidney steak cooked in beer) and Chicken and Mushroom (cream of chicken and mushrooms). Restaurants and pubs always offer vegetarian alternatives, the most common being Cheese and Onion (creamy cheddar and onion filling). For those of you who know the Sweeney Todd story, the pies are the famous pies made by Mrs Lovett!

Meat pie

Not to be confused with the traditional pie. It is a gratin pie based on lamb ragout with carrots and peas, topped with a layer of mashed potatoes. The best known variant offers, instead of minced lamb, veal (Cottage Pie).

Potato Jacket

A very popular and generally well-priced dish that uses one of the staples of English cuisine. The JP is a baked potato baked in the oven with all the skin on and carved into a cross, in the incision is melted a piece of butter. Condiments are placed inside the incision at the end of cooking. Among the most popular are baked beans or cheddar cheese.

Chicken tikka masala

Curried chicken and spice sauce! Paradoxically it is considered one of the typical dishes of British culture, although the ingredients and the name come from the Indian culinary tradition. The origins of this dish are practically unknown and there is no official recipe, but about fifty different versions. Very popular in pubs.

Hamburgers and fries

The classic sandwiches with beef patties. Unlike the big fast food chains, the burgers served in English pubs and restaurants are an authentic complete meal, where the quality of the products is combined with a careful preparation. The meat used is almost always beef or chicken breast. Served with chips or, alternatively, Onion Rings (deep fried battered onion rings) with sauces such as mayonnaise, ketchup, burger sauce (a mixture consisting of two parts mayonnaise and one part ketchup) or brown sauce (sweeter, spicier ketchup).
