The Cumberland: a historic design and rock hotel on Oxford Street

Located in the West End, a short walk from Hyde Park and Oxford Street, The Cumberland 4-star hotel is perfect for Shopping or shine in the capital because ideally located next to bus and metro stops.

The Cumberland is also an establishment linked to rock legend… Jimi Hendrix. Staying in this modern and elegant hotel can be an original idea to celebrate a particular event or simply treat yourself to a little treat!

A Brief History of the Cumberland Hotel

Opened in 1924, the Cumberland Hotel takes its name from the Duke of Cumberland, son of George II. The establishment is today known to have as famous host: Jimi Hendrix.

September 6, 1970 Jimi Hendrix stays at Cumberland to rest, after a tour of several months in Europe. Following an overdose of barbiturates, Hendrix dies in a girlfriend's room at the Samarkand Lansdowne Crescent Hotel in Notting Hill. Ironically, it is the address of the Cumberland where he stays regularly, which is entered on his death certificate.

In 2010, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's death, the hotel created a suite in his name.

Presentation of the Cumberland hotel

The Cumberland is a design and modern hotel that caters to both business customers thanks to its 25 meeting rooms and leisure customers who will appreciate its ideal location for shopping. Indeed, the Cumberland is a few steps from Oxford Street where there are more than 300 stores with essential brands: J, Sefldridges, Marks&Spencer…

The hotel is directly opposite the pub The City of Quebec, which I appreciated for its good atmosphere and its setting. You can come to this gay-friendly pub to have a drink, see a cabaret show or dance on the dance floor! Very practical to have your hotel opposite, after a festive evening!

As for the hotel reception, it is spacious, designer and houses many original works of art. The Cumberland has over 1000 rooms, a gym and offers 2 restaurants and a bar.

How are the rooms at the Cumberland Hotel?

The Cumberland offers many categories of rooms: from the standard of 20m² to the apartment of approximately 100m2. Like the reception, the bedrooms and bathrooms are modern and designer.

However, it is regrettable that some standard rooms are a bit cramped, especially if you are staying for a week and have large suitcases. But for a weekend, the standard room is fine.

Rooms adapted for people with reduced mobility (PRM)

The hotel has 10 rooms suitable for people traveling by Wheelchair : the bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious, making it easier to get around. Some elements such as the sink or the kettle tray are lowered for ease of use ...

The Jimi Hendrix Suite at the Cumberland Hotel

Treat yourself to a night in the suite Jimi Hendrix, here is an original gift idea, to celebrate an event or just to have fun! This suite is located on the 5th floor of the hotel, on the same level as where the artist stayed, although it is not the same suite.

The designers Maria Gannon and Cynthia Garcia have recreated a contemporary and psychedelic vision of the 60s with as a flagship element a multicolored three-meter fresco zigzagging on the ceilings of the suite! No detail is left to chance: fabrics, sofa and decorative items come from the famous English designer Andrew Martin. Finally, a replica of the legendary Gibson Flyin V guitar sits proudly above the desk.

The suite dedicated to the rock star costs around € 320 and includes breakfast, a bottle of Smokehead whiskey and exclusive access to the Club Lounge with unlimited drinks. For each reservation, the hotel donates £ 10 to the Jimi Hendrix Foundation, which offers musical instruments and lessons to underprivileged children.

If you are tempted by this atypical experience, you can book your night directly on the hotel website.

What is the breakfast like?

Breakfast, priced at £ 19, is served as a buffet offering a wide choice of products that will satisfy both sweet and savory lovers. The downside is the breakfast room which is located in the basement without natural light and can be noisy during high traffic

If you want breakfast outside of the hotel, you can easily find cafes in the area. If you are ready to walk 15 min, I advise you to have your breakfast at the cafe The Attendant which offers high quality products with a very good quality / price ratio, all in an unusual setting!

What are the rates at the Cumberland Hotel?

The prices vary according to the seasons and the events but in general, count from 140 € for a standard room. Do not hesitate to consult the prices on Booking or Hotels.com.

Finally, although the price may seem high, the Cumberland Hotel is considered a good value hotel for the city of London.

Conclusion

The Cumberland is ideally located in the heart of London, for shopping in Oxford Street or strolling in Hyde Park. This central location is a definite advantage if you come to London in winter because you will avoid having to face the cold too long to go to Winter Wonderland or see the Christmas windows of J and Selfridges.

And if you want to know more about the life of Jimi Hendrix, I encourage you to visit his old apartment transformed into a museum, located a few meters from the Cumberland!
