Hatchards: what do users think?

uncle em: This is probably one of the nicest bookstores in London. It has a very good selection of books of all genres and for all ages. It also offers a variety of other goods, such as magazines, stationery, small decorations and souvenirs, board games, etc. It is an excellent bookstore and certainly worth a visit when you are in the vicinity

IamSheWolf: Oldest bookshop in London, set in a beautiful historical building right in the heart of London. Three Royal seals, five floors that will satisfy everyone from children to pensioners, students to artists. Rare books department and subscription services for any taste, perfect gift for a book lover in your life.

Hebii: A very pleasant place to marvel at beauty of a old bookshop and beautifully bonded books. There are some antique books on sale as well! Boys really loved spend time in it.

Roman Khmelnytskyy: Favorite book shop in London. Three floors and loads of books on history, politics, crime and detective stories. Moreover, you can get and signed and first edition books here as well. Loved everything about it. You literally want to buy every single book and forget about Amazon altogether. The shop assistants are very friendly and helpful as well.

Tonmai Cheewasutthanon: So many books to choose from. A bibliophile’s dream. Here’s a few books that piqued my interest, and as you can tell, I love reading history and politics. Shame that I couldn’t buy it all because your boy’s broke and he couldn’t fit it all in his luggage to take on the plane ride home.

Kathleen Stattel: Loved loved this tall winding -staired multi-tiered wonder of a bookstore. Full of rye wisdom (books organized around famous quotes), a feast for the senses and a quiet place to stop and read.

Annalisa Bartali: An amazing surprise. One of the most beautiful libraries that I have ever seen. The oldest one in London. A mix of old/ first hand copies and new ones.

Andri: One of my favorite new books store because of its ‘classic British library’ interior , it’s coziness and great selection of books . There is a hidden floor with lots of old/rare/first edition books . Ask some from staff to take you there .

Valerie De Pauw: One of the biggest book store I’ve ever visited. I think it’s beautiful. It’s really lovely to walk around and explore the titles. They also spend a lot of time creating an environment of all things book lovers like.

Gordon Freeman: Fantastic bookstore right next to Regent Street. Multi-floor selection with a plethora of special books in almost every area of interest. Bought a rare book for my wife which made her very happy. You can roam around the isles or just sit comfortably in one of the many sofas and relax with some nice literature.

PJ Tan: Beautifully decorated bookshop, with a wide range of genres and book choices. Loved the Christmas decorations and Matilda Corner There are limited seating areas around the shop. With 6 levels, there is also a cafe on the ground floor and a bar/restaurant on the 5th floor.

Jonathan Lau: I feel bad because we didn’t end up buying anything in here, but my daughter spent almost two hours reading all the kids books here. She was especially interested in reading the Pokemon and Bluey books. There are washrooms here as well so that was convenient for the whole family. There are many levels and many different books. They also have toys and games here. I cannot get over how big this bookstore is. They used to have a huge bookstore like this in Toronto, but they made it smaller and they sell more household items and fewer books instead (Indigo).

Ri: I didn’t know a bookstore experience could be so marvellous 🤩 God, they have designed it in a way you’ll feel like time travel. I particularly love their country guide section (such a beautiful organisation). Overall, love the vibes, the lovely, know-it-all assistants, and their exclusive signed copies 😍 MUST VISIT EVERY TIME YOU NEED A BOOK!!! Don’t forget to buy their everyday, durable tote bag available in different sizes and colors.

r. a. Savery: My favorite bookstore in London? My favorite bookstore in London. The staff is very kind and friendly, books are arranged by countries in a beautiful pattern, and is near the iconic Baker Street! A must see if you are a book lover 📚

Kat B: Beautiful building. Great selection of books. Books you cannot even imagine exist, exist here, and you want to buy them! This shop is definitely an Instagram spot. Look out for girls especially, who are well dressed (probably students), taking photos of the surroundings and more importantly, themselves. It’s a great photo spot, who can blame them! I wish I had someone to take my photo there ;) The totes which have become a status symbol are £15. It screams that you’re too cool for a designer bag, you’re artsy, you’re not like everyone else. You’re the exact same as everyone else, sorry! I own about 5 of them... And I have a little pink kids one because it was too cutesy !

David Whalley: Beautiful old book shop with a strong focus on travel books. Good to visit if you’re in the area or looking to research your next holiday

London Review Bookshop: what do users think?

arroma1990: Every time I go, I find many new cakes that look delicious. I have tried an amazing chocolate cake. Orange almond cake was so good and tender. Falafel wrap was so good and creative. Prices are medium. The stuff are so friendly. The place is so cosy and relaxing.

Jane N: Nice bookshop. The cafe has a very pleasant outdoor courtyard where you can read in peace.

Sabs Ah: 1.5 stars for the café. 4 stars for the bookshop. Service is okay but the cakes and pastries are very dry and stale. I would not recommend the drinks at all. Not much space in the café so would not recommend for more than 2 friends at a time. The bookshop is very well organised and has a wide selection. Staff are friendly and helpful. Overall, I definitely recommend having a browse of the bookshop as it is quite unique and interesting. Hopefully, the café will see some improvements.
Response: So sorry to hear you were disappointed in your cafe experience. We bake fresh and on-site every day, and we benchmark our prices against the local area. We're always aiming to offer great food - homemade, often catering for vegan and other specialist diets - at a fair price. We think the intimacy of the inside space generates a warm and lively atmosphere, but if it's not to your taste, we do also have tables outside in the courtyard. Thanks for visiting, and glad you enjoyed the bookshop, at least.

Josiah Parry: This was by far one of the best book stores I have ever been to. It has a phenomenal collection of books. I often struggle to find books about science that aren’t of the pop-science type. No lack of them here. They carry great quarterly publications, books by Verso publications and a great section on contemporary politics. 10/10 recommend to any book nerd. Also, they have restrooms if you’re looking for one in the area. Always a plus side.

Denis Karlovsky: One of the most decent bookshops in central London, both in scope and range of the books. It is possible to be stuck here for a while because of the cozy atmosphere and interesting books. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as to the literature and bookselling, obviously. Apart from a large range of fine literature and non-fiction, the shop also offers a wide variety of books on different studies, from Classics and Philosophy to Psychology, Architecture and Physics.

Benedict Gruber: Incredibly cosy place in the heart of London, offering a good selection of teas, cakes and small meals at an affordable pricing. Very friendly staff and the books are just a grab away. Totally recommend it for a cup of anything.

Sylwia Butkiewicz: Wide selection of books including academic titles, fast service and tastefully decorated interior.

Maryam Al: One of my favourite independent bookshop in london with cafe and knowledgeable staff. Great collection of books from all genres.

Inés Gómez: Amazing bookstore! Over 6 floors with a great array of genres. It is very well organized. It also has an extensive selection of non-fiction books. Beautiful design and very bright. It also has a very nice cafe in the top floor for lunch and reading or sitting with your laptop to do some work.

Nathan Thwaites: Absolutely brilliant bookstore over 7 floors, really nicely laid out and easy guide on walls to where different sections are. Large selection of books including a large section of foreign books, which are hard to come by elsewhere as well as a very large dedicated manga section - Japanese Language ones found by the Japanese books in the language section. Will be coming to this store a lot more often now that I know this. The store is very bright and also has a cafe that I heard is very good

Daniel Roberts: Amazing bookstore! Literally it’s book heaven here. Subsequently their prices are often astronomical as well. I mostly stayed in the Foreign Language section and I was blown away by how many languages they offer. Not just learning materials either but actual novels in German, French, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Russian, Greek, Welsh, Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc. If you’re a book lover you must visit this place!

Matthew Harwood: Definitely one of my favourite book shops in London. There are seven floors covering all of the different categories of books that any avid reader could desire. There is an extensive general fiction section as well as specific sections for horror, sci-fi, crime, historical fiction and more. There is also an extensive selection of non-fiction books. This is a great store that any book lover could easily spend an afternoon exploring.

Valerie De Pauw: Nice book store. It has a lot of options but it somehow seems unorganized. It’s a beautiful store but just somehow seemed counter intuitive.I think if you are looking for popular book they probably have them. If you are a bibliophile there are better options in London.

Rebecca Selkirk: I love a good bookshop and this one is amazing. It has around 5 levels, with thousands of different genres and types. You could easily spend hours in the store browsing all the books. The shop even has a cafe on the top floor, with reasonably priced coffees.

C. Rayevsky: A huge choice of books and prints, also old postcards and other vintage things. While looking through the market it’s easy to find something that will interest you

Jack Jorgensen: Amazing place, so many amazing books, many classics and a very wide range. Lots of first editions of old books. Picked myself up a first edition Harry Potter. Also has some amazing prints available from popular shows. Overall, pretty well priced, books starting from £1 up to about £50 for popular first editions

Chris Gledhill: Great selection of second hand books situated under the bridge arches. Popular with tourists strolling along the south bank. They do a good range of fiction and non fiction and other works like maps and historical post card and images. Worth a look if you’re in the area.

Nazimations YT: This is one of my favourite places in London. The book selection is great, with nearly all being in near perfect condition. The sellers are lovely as well, very polite and approachable. The other things like the photo prints, postcards, comics, and various other memorabilia are very cool. Reasonably priced and in a lovely spot. Perfect to visit on a warm day to buy a book and go read in many of the surrounding areas.

Maddy Laxton: It was so cool!! Unfortunately the south bank doesn’t seem very accessible to those with mobility issues but it probably is! I didn’t see too much of it but it was a really cool vibe!!

Jess Watson: Gorgeous old books and good food stands nearby

Paweł Stepaniuk: Nice, tidy bookshop. It has a pretty good selection of books on site. There are way more choices on their website but the place is nice. Additionally there is a coffee shop in the same place which adds a bit of cosier vibe to the whole space.

Veronika T: Very cute place. Inside of the book shop you can find the cafe Nero. And enjoy your new book with a cup of coffee.

Anne Macmillan: Good little bookshop, with a good selection of books. Staff recommendations are useful and the coffee shop great for a read and refreshments.

Kartik Singhal: Very good, would have loved if I found the books I was looking for

Mr Pickle: Great little bookshop with a Cafe Nero sitting area at the back.Especially liked the staff recommendations on a fair few featured books, as well 3 for 2 offer. Worth a visit if you’re passing by.
Response: Thanks for the review Mr Pickle. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Blackwell's High Holborn

uncle em: This is an excellent second hand bookstore. It is basically a treasure trove of old books. Apart from fiction, they have many titles from the humanities and social sciences. It is definitely worth while perusing the shelves as one is certainly bound to stumble upon a treasure. There are very few second hand bookstores left in the area and this one maintains the tradition. It is definitely worthwhile checking it out when you are in the vicinity

ırmak: I went in thinking it was a secondhand bookshop like any other, but it has an incredible selection on any topic you can think of. Downstairs you can find books on foreign policy, economics and overall progressive politics. Upstairs there are beautiful copies of Kafka, Bulgakov and the likes. I am not sure if their books are firsthand or secondhand but the prices are cheaper than everywhere else and the copies are spotless, definitely recommend!

Djalal Tebib: A fantastic secondhand bookstore offering a wide selection of books on and about a range of topics and subjects including Astronomy, Philosophy and Mathematics.

Esther Sonneveld Alamgir: Awesome bookstore, nice loyalty card programme. Knowledgeable and helpful stuff. Highly recommended for bookworms!!🙏💙📖

jeff benjamin: Find an impressive selection over a sweep of genres with a high incidence of the more obscure, unusual and specialist items. Unobtrusive service in an ordered, clean and bright environment. Moreover, the competitive (combative) prices alone justify perusing the stock. A potent destination for the high-brows and also here I browse

joan lockwood: What a neighbourhood book store should be. Warm, helpful team, easy to find something to read or they’ll order it for you. Better than a chain or Amazon.

Mark Leveson: Lovely traditional, old-fashioned bookshop with tons to browse through. Not the most friendly staff though. Perhaps I just went on the wrong day. I will go back though.

Hannah Capella: This is a lovely local bookshop, with a great range of titles. I am very grateful to them for delivering a book I had ordered to my door while self-isolating, which will save me from days of boredom! The delivery was free of charge and it was dropped off within 24 hours after I emailed to request it. Huge thanks to Primrose Hill Books.

Response: thank you for the review!

Isabella K: A lovely bookshop. Has a quaint feel and friendly staff. Always make sure to visit when in the area. They offer books covering a diverse range of topics and are reasonably priced.

Huw Davies: I take my hat off to this shop as the market is challenging enough and their outgoings in the centre of London must be very high, however I felt this place was a missed opportunity. A lot of empty shelves and a very mixed selection - history was strong (a lot of hardbacks) however fiction I struggled to find much of interest or note. I also question why they have books on high shelves out of reach of customers when the shelves at floor level in the same bookcase are empty - this seems to be the opposite of common-sense. I hope they can improve their stock holdings as this place could have lot going for it.

Amy F: Really great selection of second hand books and older titles. A great place to pick up something you’ve never heard of and explore some new books!

Tim Aldridge: This shop holds a large range of products, from wrapping paper through to hard % paper back books - all at substantially reduced prices. The range of paperbacks is very large with a predominance of female authors. All in all a most interesting shop to browse in but being narrow & full of display stands it can get a bit crowded !
Response: Hello! THakjs for the positive review, but I think you may have left this for us by mistake...we don't sell wrapping paper or other products , we just sell used and rare books, and we don't have display stands... Thank you!

Oksana: This is a small nice shop trading used books. They have some really old rare foliants as well as more generic stuff. Lots of illustrated art books.
Response: Thanks Oksana

Lizzy Frykman: Very fun little used bookstore! There are tons of collectibles, as well as cheaper paperbacks. The staff are very friendly and happy to answer any questions/requests you have. Its a bit cramped in there, so be prepared, but it is definitely worth it!

The staff is wonderful people who always have a smile and a nice word to say. They are beyond helpful and make every visit feel like you are a regular. I highly recommend it and intend to spend many more hours here myself.
Response: Thank you so much for such a lovely review.

Ian Dowsett: A great book shop on two floors. The main store in Marylebone is definitely worth a visit also for the natural light via a huge skylight.
Response: Many thanks Ian.

Chad Greenblatt: Excellent Daunt Books location. They have a wide variety of titles and recommendations on show. The staff were very friendly in giving recommendations and finding books that you may need. The selection downstairs is great and is well stocked in a variety of genres and interests. They also have a number of events and talks going on which sound great.
Response: Thank you so much Chad.

H S B: Lovely book shop and great staff! I love this book shop and so does my young son!!! Both thumbs up from me!!!Thanks for your great service team DB!
Response: Thank you!

H P: Really lovely book shop with a great selection. Only comment would be that when I was served at the till the member of staff was quite cold and dismissive. Other than that was a lovely experience.
Response: We are so sorry you had a negative experience. We try our very best to give the best customer service we can, and we are just sorry this time it didn't hold up. We hope we can look after you better next time.

Maurizio G. F: What a gem. I absolutely love their selection of books and the staff are very knowledgeable and pleasant. An oasis of culture in the city
Response: Thank you Maurizio.

Stuart: Excellent book shop over two floors. There is a good variety of stock with excellently curated selections out on tables. I never leave again without a purchase despite not going in with a book in mind!

Natinho Lima: Very extensive range of cards. Shapes and prices. Looking for that centenarian birthday, all cards here. We specially liked the boxed cards. The shop has other items on sale, worth coming in and browse.

Phaines Kilatu: I had a great experience shopping here! You have so many lovely things, I had a hard time making up my mind. Thanks for helping me!

Ettore Botti: Awesome bookstore, I got a promotion, 4 fiction titles for 10£, totally unbelievable. They’ve got a good selection with different titles, shout-out to the travel section, it seemed quite big and diversified.

N T: One of my favourite bookstores in London. They have an amazing selection of art and history books despite the fact the shop itself is quite small. Also the books are much cheaper than buying from other bookstores for some reason, which is great!! If you find a book that you’re interested in, don’t hesitate to buy it. Most likely you won’t find it again next time you revisit.
Response: Thanks so much for visiting and for giving us such a lovely review 😊

Longbin Li: Lovely book shop with great selection of books. The blond long hair staff was really friendly, big smile and welcoming. Whereas the bob hair staff wasn’t so much. Maybe she just wasn’t in a good mood.

Tammana Yasmin: Horrendous customer service. Shop staff (blond lady) seriously lacks warmth and friendliness, and manager (brunette) is rude and abrupt, cuts you off with a flow of word-diarrhea and then slams the door in your face (metaphorically) to end the conversation. No hello, no goodbye. Her parents must be well proud. If you want your morning ruined due to a lack of basic courtesy and manners, visit this place. Alternatively, go into the station and visit the small WHSmith bookstore, manager was way nicer.

George Roscoe: Great bookshop, helpful staff and great selection of greetings cards

l: I came to gift a book about Greece and I was doubtful the one they had was advanced enough. The lady confirmed it was and it was actually the book that my guest wanted to buy!

uncle em: This is a large branch of the Waterstones bookstore chain at Trafalgar Square in London. It has a very good selection of books of all genres and for all ages. It also offers a variety of other goods, such as magazines, stationery, small decorations and souvenirs, board games, etc. It is an excellent bookstore and certainly worth a visit when you are in the vicinity

Aliya Rysbek: Cafe: comfy place to read a book, have a chat, but food is ordinary, as well as coffee. So hard to recommend. But the selection of books is great in this bigger chapter.

Lalla: staff are so lovely! had a slice of banana bread which was almost as good as mine😂🍌 so great to see the penguin clothbound classics collection there; was able to add to my own! nice ambience as always, and the only thing i would say is that the spirituality/new age thought/yoga section was slightly dry and in need of stocking up with a few more books. those which were there were good books, however!

Alexis: Nice bookshop chain, the staff seemed helpful, and they had a great table set up for best crime / mystery books of all time.

W Perry: Nice bookstore and cafe, on Trafalgar Square, across from the National Gallery Museum. Great location.Reasonably priced books and cafe.Recommended.

Inger Margrete Hansen: While Waterstones prides itself in their extremely amazing selection of books, some of the shops, including this one have opened cafes. These cafes have provided a safe haven to both students, workers and readers. Not only is it full of a calm atmosphere which extremely polite cafe workers, but it also has a spacious room for people to get on with their own work, reading or conversations. Would highly recommend if you’re looking for a place to study or read or merely drink a cup of coffee while surrounded by books.

Hammidah Shaari: Excellent selection of books, excellent staff and a very good location

Joe Gilliland: Great selection, friendly staff, welcoming and relaxed. Grest displays too. My son spent ages in the shop looking at books before making his choice, he loved the Myths and Legends section in the kids area!

Libreria Bookshop: what do users think?

Katherine Miskulin: Visiting Libreria is good for the soul. Quite possibly my favourite bookshop in London. I usually leave here (incredibly happy) with at least three more books than I planned on buying, but never regret it. The selection is always amazingly curated, and inspiring. Always someone friendly and welcoming behind the till.

Inés Gómez: Stunning and cozy little bookshop with a beautifully curated selection of books. The lighting and design creates a captivating atmosphere. The mirror in the back makes it seem bigger than it is. The staff is very friendly and they have very good recommendations. If you are in the area I would definitely recommend stopping by!

Bryan Goh JH: Libreria is a cosy little bookshop off a side street perpendicular to Brick Lane. Whole not on the Main Street, everyone should make the short detour to check the bookshop out. It’s just a minute away! Like most people, I am struck by the innovative interior and creative use of space. More interestingly, the books are organised by certain themes and ‘feels’ mixing fiction and non-fiction which creates a lovely way of discovering new books! However, the best thing about Libreria is the friendly staff. Cecilia and Lloyd are knowledgeable and enthusiastic and you can sense their love for reading and their job. They have excellent recommendations and are just lovely people to talk to!

David Whalley: Nice way to spend half an hour if you’re in the Brick Lane area. A beautifully curated selection of books with lit cubbyholes for reading and knowledgable, friendly staff to help you find what you’re looking for.

Lyn: Memorable book browsing experience! Nestled within a less crowded area of Brick Lane, this bookshop looks spacious at first glance with mirrors at the back, though you’ll find that it’s quite small as you enter. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by a friendly bookseller and you’ll find yourself in awe of the titles they have. There’s a small cozy kids’ corner and some cushioned corners for reading. You’ll also find some designated spaces on the bookshelves that have been curated by popular authors - one of them that stood out to me was Bernadine Evaristo’s curated collection. Great bookshop for moments of tranquility amidst all busyness within the area on a weekend. I recommend visiting this cosy little bookish spot to unwind after a long stroll through Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market.

Sabs Ah: Beautiful, quiet and unique bookshop. No phones allowed or photos. Some books are quite high up on the very tall shelves but nice to look at.

Jurin Ohyama: My favourite book shop in London. It’s got really special vibes and a wonderful selection of books. Worth going through the ugly streets to visit this place

rile06: Beautifully curated selection of books. Couldn’t leave without four books in my bag. Lovely interior and decor too. :)

Corey McKeegan: A really wonderful, uniquely designed bookshop. It appears much larger than it actually is thanks to a floor to ceiling mirror at the end. But don’t be fooled by its size, the carefully curated book and print publication selection will have something to interest any reader. There are cosy nooks throughout for leafing through potential purchases and the staff are welcoming and helpful and can give you advice on how to take part in the events run by the bookshop. For book lovers it’s a must-see!
