Winchester Palace: what do users think?

Jared Meaux: Just walking around London we come across very interesting historical points of interest such as this. Modern London appears to be a reasonably good job of saving those when they are uncovered. Here is the Great Hall of the Bishops of Winchester, founded 12 century and appears to have started construction of the building 13th century. That’s the same general timeframe of when the Southwark cathedral was rebuilt after the London fire of 1212.

Pamela Howlett: All that remains of the Palace of Winchester is the west wall of the 14th Century Great Hall with its rose window tracery. The Palace was the London home of the Bishops of Winchester from 1109 to 1626. In 1642 the palace was converted into a prison for Civil War Royalists.

cristi cristian: It's a place that will put someone's imagination to work because the place is one tall what's left from a gradious building. It is very well maintained.Definitely, you should visit it.Visited on Weekend Wait time No wait Reservation recommended No …

FABIANA F.: Small ruin of the palace that was the residence of the Bishops of Winchester and that was damaged in the fire of 1814.

Belén Alonso: Beautiful

Anderson GRINGO: These ruins are all that remain of the palace of the powerful Bishops of Winchester, one of the largest and most important buildings in medieval London.Founded in the 12th century by Bishop Henry of Blois, brother of King Stephen. The Palace was built to comfortably house bishops when they were in London on royal or administrative business. These visible remains were part of the Great Hall, which formerly adjoined the south bank of the Thames. To your right is the gable wall. It has a magnificent rose window, and doors leading to the cellar, pantry and kitchen. Goods such as wine could be stored in a vaulted cellar below the hall, with passage to the river dock. The rest of the palace was organized around two courtyards which housed many buildings including a prison, brewery and butcher's shop. As the Bishop's private retreat from the stresses of medieval rule, the palace also had a tennis court, bowling alley and pleasure gardens.

Marco Rubertelli: The monument dedicated to the Duke of WellingtonI saw this monument with my girlfriend during a holiday in London. The structure is located inside Hyde Park Corner, a small garden on the south-east side of the large London park. The work is an arched stone door with a chariot on top to symbolize victory. The whole area is always very popular with tourists who can reach it thanks to the dedicated metro stop.

Mohammed Sameer: London love

Michael Versi: We had such a fantastic time here. Being a Londoner I had no idea that the arch wasn't solid and contained an incredible multi-story exhibition. The staff were lovely and keen to educate, the views and exhibitions were fantastic and insightful. For £6.80 this was a steal. Thanks to Clive for making our time memorable and the lovely couple who shared their stories of meeting the queen. Definitely worth a visit!

Isabel Lappin: Beautiful art Dec interior.Visited on Weekday Wait time No wait Reservation recommended Yes …

Diana: Visited with our granddaughter and some friends, she is 7 and it was the first time she had used an audio tour. She enjoyed hearing about the rooms and guiding us round and the extra games and activities were excellent. She liked dressing up but it would have been nice to have the clothes in smaller sizes. The gardens were pretty and koi carp in the moat huge and very hungry! We enjoyed our lunch and she loved the adventure playground. All the staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.

Roman Truba: Pretty good place to go with kids on a weekend day, esp if you have English Heritage membership. There is a decent playground and food in cafe is pretty cheap and good. A lot of green grass to sit and spend some time enjoying the views of the palace. The palace itself is a large house in art deco style from 1930s, and a large hall from XV century. The house has neat design and you feel like you’re taking a dive in that pre-WWII jazz age, where ladies wore elegant skinny dresses and little elegant hats.A lot of small details around the house is very interesting to explore, and I enjoyed my time there. There are also some ancient ruins on site, but none of them you can explore really.

Andy West: Fantastic contrast between medieval and art deco architecture. Lovely place

Robin Rimbaud-Scanner: An absolutely wonderful discovery. Off the noisy main road and into this paradise of design and future thinking living. Underfloor heating and a unique vacuum cleaning system way ahead of the country, with rooms that all beautifully presented and inspiring. You can only imagine the life the lemur that lived here led then :-DThe free audio guide was extremely valuable, and mercifully short in each room, unlike many locations where you struggle with too much information! The gardens are stunning with fish that follow you as walk past the moat, expecting you to feed them probably.Small lockers are available at the entrance to the women's toilets and you can safely leave your bags on the wall hooks in the gents, as staff and volunteers are around all the time.We spent over 3 hours there and could easily have spent much more. Definitely recommended!

Temporary Analgesic: Real insight into 1930's high society living. Very well preserved. A credit to English Heritage.Visited on Weekday Wait time No wait Reservation recommended Yes …

Sandra M: Eltham Palace is a stunning Art Deco gem nestled within a medieval royal palace in London. Combining medieval grandeur with 1930s glamour, Eltham Palace offers visitors a unique glimpse into both historical and modern architecture. The Great Hall, originally built in the 15th century, showcases medieval craftsmanship and features impressive hammerbeam ceilings and intricate carvings. In contrast, the stunning Art Deco interiors added by the Courtauld family in the 1930s exude elegance and sophistication. The interiors boast luxurious touches such as marquetry, lacquerwork, and exquisite furnishings, reflecting the opulent lifestyle of the Courtaulds during the interwar period.Visitors to Eltham Palace can explore both the medieval and Art Deco sections of the palace, learning about its rich history and the lives of its former inhabitants through immersive exhibitions and guided tours. The beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding the palace provide a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and picturesque water features to admire.Eltham Palace offers a fascinating journey through time, showcasing the intersection of medieval and Art Deco architecture and providing visitors with a captivating glimpse into the lives of its former residents. Whether you're a history enthusiast, architecture aficionado, or simply seeking a unique cultural experience, Eltham Palace promises to leave a lasting impression.
