The Castle Inn: what do users think?
James Fogg: A relaxed pub that attracts customers of all ages. Even better in the summer when the outdoor seating can be used. Good selection of drinks that are well priced. A chilled glass corresponding to the selected drinks is typically offered. The bar is well staffed so getting served is always quick. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Haven't ever tried the food options but always looks good when viewed on other tables Fully recommend.

matthew wright: Food/breakfast is a little more expensive than other places but 100% is worth the extra due to the quality of the food and the service is top tier. The quote " you get what you pay for" is definitely applicable to this establishment. ☺️😋

James Scott: Lovely pub good pint of Guinness landlady is so friendly and welcoming .glad she's got the pub full of customers after a difficult period

Water bowl brought out for our dog whilst we looked through the food options. Lovely food at reasonable prices and attentive staff. Nothing to fault, we'll definitely be back.
Stuart Fowler: First time in over 25 years I’d been in the castle, I always known it as a “Drinkers” pub, had lunch today with friends and have to say it was superb. Highly recommend it 👌🏼
Craig Mullarkey: Nice pint. Found the bar to be a bit wiffy. Staf nice and comfortable to enjoy a pint
Patricia Wilcox: Went there following a Funeral. The buffet the pub laid on was really exceptional. More than enough and well varied..and doggy provided for later..
Richard Vest: Popped in here for lunch and would highly recommend. Very polite service, great food, huge portions.
Brenda Nolan: Three of us went in for a meal. We all ordered different things from the menu. Every choice was really good food well cooked. Excellent service from a friendly and cheerful young girl. Would recommend this place to eat 👄 Xxxx
Elche Doluner: Amazing food cooked and served to an outstanding standard. My favourite go to for meals and catch up with friends in a warm friendly atmosphere.
Eric Demetriou: Had a very nice Rib Eye Steak followed by an Eton Mess for dessert.
Robbie Spence (roadlesstravelleruk): Vegan hot dog, tasty and generous portion, clean and friendly atmosphere, real ale, etc.
John Richardson: Yeah, it's OK and they serve a decent pint but for me it gets too noisy if you happen to want to drink your beer outside.

Dog and Pheasant: what do users think?
Brian Hayward: Food very good, staff excellent
Andrew Laws: I can’t say enough positive things about the team here. The service was excellent even though the pub was very busy. I’m not a fan of the televisions in the booths, but that’s my subjective opinion and takes a nothing away from the great overall experience.
Tony: Decent pub and nice for a stop off after a long walk
Anna Saville: Food was nice. We didn't expect much but were left nicely surprised, friendly staff but unfortunately quite run down for decor. Very reasonably priced on food and drinks.
Hannah Cameron: I hate to say it but we won't be returning any time soon, the building and interior is grubby and run down, the paint work is old and dirty, there were cobwebs all over the ceiling and walls above our table once we finally sat down, there was only one server on shift when we arrived and she was serving a bar full of workmen, aswell as being the one to take food orders and take food to tables. She was lovely but I felt sorry for her. The table had chewing gum stuck underneath which my kids put their hands in. The food came out quite quickly but was it only mediocre. We went on a Tuesday and they have offers on mix it up platters and sizzling plates. So it was cheap for 4 of us but not even the price could encourage us to return. They need more staff and a serious clean/ refurb :(
george bugg: Was laugh
Brian Leverett: Had a nice lunch. Was served by Terry who was prompt, courteous, made us feel right at home. Food hot, beer cold what more could you wish for?
Sarah Tighe: What a lovely experience this evening …. What a change … lovely new manager Terry . Polite , welcoming, efficient and attentive. Food was lovely aswellWe will be back very soon .
Dionne Petch: Was a nice place friendly staff but maybe could do with a face lift decor was a bit sore .
chelsea petch: 10/10 service from Terry, catered to all our needs. Food was lovely
Margaret Cook: Lovely meal, excellent service and pleasant welcoming staff.
Susan Punter: I've been coming here for the last 20 years, I think lol .Certainly, it's needed a little tlc now .The food, unfortunately, and for the very first time was disappointing ! Maybe a different cook in the kitchen, I don't know ! But on the day I was trying to impress my friend that it was amazing food and the price was fantastic.Unfortunately, I failed, and so did the dog and pheasant that day . Sad !!!Couldn't ever take pictures. The food was so bad . Sorry .
Tina Boyle: Great food a a good price
jacobs simon: Good service but food was terrible will not be going there again
Fred: The food at the pub was OK the waitress got lost with the order the pub is in desperate need of a revamp painting and decorating seats old and worn
Kharaun “Ntangbl” Campbell: This pub has taken on new management. My post is accurate as of the time of writing (February 2023) as are the pics. So let's go!The Dog and Pheasant is a great neighborhood pub! The staff are absolutely amazing! They are very welcoming. They have been more than happy to help. The food! So we ordered two Mix It Up (on a Sunday) with the 15oz (3x5oz) Gammon with sweet potato fries and onion rings. (See the picture). Liam (the cook for the visit) did his thing! The gammon was cooked to perfection! It was juicy and succulent and worked well with both the Korean BBQ sauce and the Texan Sauce. There could've been more onion rings, but at the price paid, I'm not going to complain. But the sweet potato fries! Generally, most places, they're not thoroughly cooked! Liam, made these to perfection! Crispy on the outside, nice, fluffy, and soft on the inside. That is hard to do with sweet potatoes.Peter is an amazing addition to the pub! He's very knowledgeable! He was extremely caring for our needs. He knows his way around a pub of this nature! Younger staff can definitely learn from this gentleman! The ONLY reason I'm not giving them 5 Stars is due to an incident earlier in the week. There was a situation where a person came in and made some very upsetting and offensive comments. I had to address the issue. One of the managers actually stated something to individual. However the person was still served. I'm not a snowflake and have tough skin. However, he should have been shown the door!Overall, great place! Great food! Plenty of parking! Wonderful garden with playground! This is a FAMILY pub! They're trying to get entertainment back. Right now there is karaoke once a month!
Toorop Ramlugon: Unfortunately I did not enjoy my food that are ordered in this pub, I ordered fish and chips and mushy peas, when my food arrived are only got a bit of chips enough for a baby to eat and one scoop of mashed peas and the fish was so thin and more battered crispy and it didn't taste nice at all, I challenge the person that brought my food and told him is this all I get and he said I'm afraid so, I was not happy with his answer, this is why I don't like paying for food in advance before or receiving it. I'm very disappointed not only that as the time I got to my table when I brought my drinks and noticed on the floor was dirty there was burgers on the floor and chips, and the table was all sticky was not clean. And we waited 40m for our food to arrive I would not go there again not for that portion size.I dont understand why they made us pay befor we see our food. I say this to everyone order and wait until you Received your food and you're happy with it then pay. I will make sure I get a full refund
Lauren Brand: Get exactly what you pay for. Food was good and plenty of choice for vegans too.
Sophie Finch: Food is good since née management took over just very annoying that kastv3 times we've been there hasn't been anywhere to sit other than outside as 3/4 of the tables have been reserved for 3 hours later...just seems a little weird to turn down paying customers to reserve an empty table for 3-3 1/2 hours?
Hannah Granger: Just had a family meal here. My husband had the mini mix grill and the chicken was disgusting he thought it had the texture of fish. He complained and was told that’s how it came and nothing was done to rectify it. My dad had a roast and the beef was really tough to cut, the Yorkshire's over cooked and the meal was cold. The other 8 of us had meals that were nice. The reason why I’m rating this place low is because when my dad and husband complained about their meals nothing was done to rectify it and in my opinion that is really poor service. They were told that’s how the meat comes in and all they do is heat it up. They didn’t change the food or offer a refund - disgusting as our family spent a lot of money here. Also it’s so cold in there we had to leave our coats on throughout our meal.
Jon Linton: It was a nice place we didn't need to book although the choice to do so was on the website, The staff were polite and helpful and the food was as you'd expect from a hungry horse, The kids were happy we left full and it was very cheap, We will definitely visit again 😁

No other 'pub grub' available, but anyone who would like to bring a take away in from outside, is welcome to enjoy it with their pint.Fortnightly live music on a Sunday along with pub quizzes, film nights, and other entertainment dotted throughout the calendar. All in all, a friendly 'proper pub' I would wholeheartedly recommend.

The Whalebone: what do users think?
Natalie Tuckwell: Uncle David said: "The most delicious buffet I've ever tasted."We enjoyed a lovely family afternoon at The Whalebone, and were able to reserve a seated area. At the last minute a few days before, I requested some gluten-free and vegetarian options to the buffet, realising there probably wasn't enough time. The chef was fantastic: she added two different types of home-cooked gluten-free vegetarian pies, plus some great filling salads which included lentils and feta cheese.Other family members said the fish and meat dishes were really tasty. I would recommend that if you'd like something vegetarian, vegan and/or gluten-free, you ask in advance and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Dave Bishop: Had an amazing Sunday Roast. The three young ladies working the bar worked tirelessly and provided good service
sonny: Probably one of the best roast I've ever eatenChef come out to help with some dietary requirements, really nice genuine bloke, super helpful and professional. Can't wait to eat here again
Steve Chase: Friendly, professional and great food. Highly recommend the Whalebone
Grant Robinson: Absolutely Fabulous
Clyde Baker: Brilliant / trad gastro pub
wildfilly89: The food was OK, not worth the hour long wait between ordering & receiving or the price. Shan't be going back anytime soon.
Pauline Archer: Food was great, will go back soon
Elizabeth James: First time here. Young lady was lovely and helpful. Food was amazing. Would highly recommend.
Tim Kershaw: A lovely setting and nice atmosphere. A good menu and a cut above ‘pub grub’. Attentive staff. The filet steak was good if not exceptional.
Keith Parrott: This is everything a really good village pub should be. Tables of locals in for drink, with visitors like us in for dinner. The fresh cooked food and service is excellent. Only a short drive from Colchester not difficult to find. Looking forward to our next visit. 😊👍🥩
Natasha Cleverdon: I’ve been to this pub/restaurant many times and have always been impressed. Today I took my family to show it off to them as they travelled to see us from Milton Keynes.Never been so embarrassed and disappointed. Told the family they were in for a treat and got let down badly. We were a table of 6. 4 adults and 2 kids. Red flags were there from the start. They’d messed up our booking and given our resevered table to someone else. Then we we asked to order we were told they couldn’t take our order for 15 minutes! When we finally ordered it was 2:45pm. Our food still had not arrived an hour later! We asked the staff what was going on and they all seemed confused. When I asked to speak to the manager about our disappointment the manager wouldn’t talk to me.I was then told our food was coming. However, we all ordered steak and chips and some ordered rare and some medium. The meat was grey and dry! It wasn’t what we ordered. The family was tired, hungry and extremely disappointed. We complained again and still no manager to talk with us!We didn’t pay for our food as only ate the chips. They were good chips but what a disappointment. We left and took the kids to McDs.Really shocked at how bad we were treated today and how there was a lack of communication. As I have said I’ve bee. Here many times before and never had a bad meal but today was awful. Not sure how I feel about ever returning. Such a shame as the location is lovely.
John Humpston: really good food with excellent service
Mohammed Peeroo: Fish and chips were dripping in oil. Poor execution.
Daniel Waite: Had a wonderful meal and drink sitting in the garden overlooking beautiful countryside. Value for money!!!The staff were very friendly and attentive, lovely touch having the blankets available to take out into the garden as it was a little fresh when the sun went behind the clouds. Thank you for a lovely afternoon, will be coming back very soon!Revisited with family, had another wonderful meal. Sat outside under the new canopy platformed dining area which sheltered from the sun on a beautiful day.The owner and staff very friendly and helpful as on our previous visits.Thank you again xxx
Emma Killick: Really expensive and the staff aren't the friendliest
Ermanno Cattaneo: Friendly staff, very nice beer garden.
Sky God: Beautiful place. Very friendly staff too.
cathy wright: Lovely pub, lovely setting, lovely food but only one toilet????
Howard Springall: Poor service and rude and dismissive owner.
stephen hopkins: What a great pub to eat and drink, great staff, food excellent, large portions, well worth traveling from where we are staying in Fordham Heath. Definitely will be coming back for a visit, 👏👏👏👍👍🍺🍺

Stock Bailey Wine Bar: what do users think?
Ivan Roberts: Nice atmosphere.Friendly staff.
Chris Bounce: Really nice bar. Very friendly. Great atmosphere & good music. 👍🏼
Mayer Levy: A lovely place to share time with your close people.
Another Fox: The bar man was very kind and courteous! I shall definitely return! The wine bar was peaceful and very pleasant too!
Danni Bishopp: Best place to go in Colchester for a drink! Such a nice atmosphere, fantastic drinks & charcuterie boards & Teresa behind the bar was so lovely to chat to! Definitely be returning.
Mai: A hidden gem. It definitely deserves more attention. Wine, service, ambiance and price are all amazing.
Georgina Smith: Louis was absolutely lovely today. Despite being on his own, his service couldn’t of been more spot on. I came in today for my friends birthday and was greeted with 10/10 service and this continued during our late lunch, despite the stress of a one man band. Louis is an absolute credit to the business and I couldn’t thank him enough for his hospitality. He made our birthday lunch! Thank you Louis for his amazing service. We will definitely be returning!
darron welch: Pre Dinner drinks in here last night, such a lovely venue. It's really very comfortable in here and has a great friendly atmosphere . Makes such a change from going to a Pub and they do lovely Party Platters.
Gemma Prior: Great place for a birthday get together, great service from staff
Matt Blackburn: Had a lovely mid afternoon date there, our waiter was perfect, the coffee was good, The Albarino wine was delicious and the sharing platter hit the spot. Well done guys had a really great time
Lisbeth Bown: Lovely place. Had a 41th nursing reunion last night. Great food xx
Neil Elliot: Great shop
Drea Loving Life: If I could have given it zero stars I would have. We only stayed for 5mins because the member of staff who spoke us was very rude. Management need to invest in some customer service training because the way my stepdaughter and I were spoken to was completely out of line.We then went to the Pavilion restaurant where we received 1st class customer service!
Roberto Esposito: A pleasant bar to while away a few hours. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was very nice too.
Kim Sheffield: Lovely relaxed atmosphere . Helpful staff. A pity not doing food. Well worth a visit for a drink.
litres reader: What a difference the staff can make! Came in to face a grim lady at the counter who clearly was disgusted to see a customer. Tea was served in a cup with a dirty rim, no usual biscuit neither for a tea, nor for coffee. All served with a face like she evidenced a cockroach. Yuck.
WJET: Stock and Bailey is a super place to eat and drink. The tapas menu has enough on it to keep anyone more than happy and it’s served beautifully. Dominic and Simon are both much more than friendly and they have a real passion for customer service and care. There is nothing they don’t know between them. Whether it’s an exceptional coffee served by the amazing Dominic (the very best coffee connoisseur I have ever had the pleasure to meet and chat with) or a rare and specialist tea, fine wine or the very best champagne - they can make anything on a scale and level that can’t be repeated in Colchester anywhere. Simon builds rapport like no other and they compliment each other very well. The location of S&B is perfect and is in the best position in town to avoid all the riff-raff and loud teenagers out experimenting in town. The food, service, staff and management works together superbly!! I can’t recommend the place any more highly than I already do to anyone and everyone!! Bravo guys!! Amazing work and standards of service that is rarely ever seen
Anna Ospennikova: Lovely relaxed setting, I love the combination of natural light from a glass ceiling, mild jazz, indistinct chatter and frothy latte (yes, not only wines there). My new favourite.A great place to escape from half term noises😉
Z D: Good people bar..Good laugh..
C J: fantastic tapas! Amazing service, the team there are so friendly and helpful and a really nice atmosphere. A wonderful hidden gem.
Carol Brett Moore: So nice and friendly efficient staff

owen jenkins: Went for a few beers before the game, great food and staff
matthew mcnally: Always something new here friendly atmosphere
Lea Freeman: Very busy, long wait at the bar and for food. But good value as always & food was decent quality. A big pub that was perfect for our large group.
M A Walker: It's a Weatherspoons. Do I need to say any more?
Tony Zotti: The food was excellent well done tony mbe
Clive Adams: Always a great selection of beers and always good value.
Alan Wilson: Great place go get something g ear & drink sort me out the time I spent there nice staff.
Stephen Macnamara: Excellent venue due to the buildings past history, no problems here!
Boylikeh Gamin RBLX: Cool
Jayne Smith: Good Friday night òut with friends. Couldn't get app to work but ordered food and drink at the bar. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Jake Harris: Really like the setting. Good Wetherspoons
Iain Mitchell: We were there for breakfast but it still just busy enough to have a vibe. Staff helpfully and friendly
Anthony Austin: Spoons... What can be said about spoons...Ordered through the app to very little interaction with the staff, but everyone seemed OK. It doesn't matter what spoons you go in wherever you are in the country, it has the same clientele, so you have to be in the mood to deal with k***heads. If you're OK with that, you'll be OK. Drinks are ridiculously cheap!
Carlos Collis: If I could give 0 stars I would.Did the chef come here to die.Had mixed grill cheap tasting sausages, chips ok tastless mushrooms, over cooked and dry gammon and pork. As for the lamb BTH ( burnt to hell ) the steak bth as well tasted like liver. Waste of money shocking food.
Karen Mitchell: We spent nice afternoon here. Lunch was good and staff were polite.
Graham Penny: Very good will return
heather crook: I have answered your questions already
Rob Miller: It's a very popular pub and very busy. Not bad at all and pricing very good, just a bit too big/busy for me
Jeff Lucas: Another great repurposed old building, this was an old theatre. Caught it while a mini beer festival was on so plenty of choice.
Mandy Lee: Great place to grab a bite to eat and have a coffee , without the huge price tag of a coffee bar.
Jane Sibley: Went there with my partner for lunch ,it was his second time, and he was amazed at how cheap it was as you get a drink included in the meal you choose. It is very popular for all age groups . The staff was friendly and polite. My partner said that he definitely go there again as he can be very fussy where he goes for a drink.

I’ve eaten in some wonderful places & all three course were incredible, with great value for money. Everyone wants to return again & we most certainly will. The atmosphere was beautiful - lovely refurbished restaurant with a country feel. Perfect for larger parties, families or a more intimate meal. Well done guys, you certainly delivered & lived up to your reputation as a warm, friendly place with fantastic food
David McGill: Lovely food awful slow service total lack of customer care
Celia Crossley: Excellent Sunday breakfast. Wonderfully cooked, filled us up. Great quality. Thank you
Lisa Collins: My second consecutive week eating here and I can confidently say that the roast dinner is not to be missed! Everything was cooked to perfection, presented beautifully, and represented excellent value for money. The new chefs are consistently delivering delicious, quality food and I'm looking forward to returning and sampling more from the menu!

Sharon Briggs: Lovely people and food xx
John Munton: The best pub meal that I have had in years. It was excellent. Huge portions as well. I can highly recommend it.
Lee Payne: Food was ok but we arrived around 30 minutes before the kitchen was due to close and kind of felt wanting a meal was a bit of an imposition!
