GreyFriars Hotel & Restaurant: what do users think?
Cherie Evans: Lovely afternoon tea with lots of sunshine unusual dishes in pretty surroundings
Perla B.: I have been to Greyfriars 4 times, and every single time, the food and the service have been outstanding. The afternoon tea is great. If you want, they give you extra sandwiches and tea refills for free! The restaurant is also great, the food is delicious.Rooms: Rooms are clean, spacious, and elegant.
Ranteer Singh: Awful experience, food was diabolical, dry bread, smelly prawns, sticky ham, cramp table, sloppy service, two of our party were left with food poisoning, raised concerns with manager Glen Freeman & was just ignored, love to support local businesses but am extremely sad to say avoid this one, there are far better places to go out in ColchesterFood & drinks: Awful
Susannah Bunting: Excellent service. Spotlessly clean. Room smaller than I had hoped. Would have loved a bath. Food pricey but very good. Lovely building and very conveniently situated with on site parking.Rooms: Spotlessly clean. Would have loved a bath. A bit on the small side.Nearby activities: We had a castle view. Lots of museums within 5 mins walk.Walkability: All amenities within 5 minutes walking distance.Food & drinks: Food pricey but excellent.
rbb: Had a great Mother's Day celebration w/ 'savoury' afternoon tea. Friendly staff and nice ambience. Good value for money. Comes highly recommeded 👍Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Dan Scott Professional Wedding Photographer: Fantastic venue! Perfect for weddings! Beautifully decorated rooms and high quality food. Staff extremely helpful!
Gulam Qazi: My fillet steak was excellent, disappointed with the scallops, expecting to see a couple instead what appeared to be small piecesService: 4/5|Location: 4/5Hotel highlights Luxury, Quiet …More
Big G: A word to the wise: if you're not entirely happy with your experience at Greyfriars, do leave your feedback here on Google. I had a pretty poor experience on 11th December 2022, thought I'd give them the benefit of detailed feedback confidentially through the email request they send after drinking and dining there, and it went completely unacknowledged. From their perspective, I guess private feedback can safely be ignored.
Jayne Spall: What a great experience. The staff are really attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent and very good wines by the glass so we could match with each dish. Thank you for a lovely birthday meal.Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Craig Mullarkey: Top top hotel. Room fabulous, staff fabulous, food fabulous. Could not fault anything at all here. Well done to all the team there for making our stay so nice. Very rare you get this quality these days. Could not recommend this hotel any higher. Exemplary in all respects 🙏🏻Rooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Luxury …More

From the moment we checked in, the service was excellent from all members of staff. Our suite was substantial, the breakfasts superb and everywhere spotlessly clean.Ideally situated in the City of Colchester.Easy access to Constable Country, and the coast. We WILL return.

Colin Shippey: Great hotel 🏨 in the centre of Colchester this hotel is a must loads of history lovely staff.Rooms: The room is of good quality with all your needs.Nearby activities: The castle is a great place to visit with a lot of history
John Fletcher: It was too busy & noisy for me in this occasion (Sat afternoon) but have previously liked it midweek.
Sharon Presland: Food as usual very good. Only issue is parking.Service: 4/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Lois Eunike: Was here for my 40th Birthday celebration. Had afternoon tea together with other 2 family members. The Restaurant service was good and efficient, they handled with care about my sister in law food allergies requirements. Those pastries, cakes and sandwiches were good, our most favourite was the Fruity Scone, so light, soft in the middle and slightly crunchy on the outside.. my sister in law was decided to keep one scone back home in a cute little doggy bag..Can't forget the customer toilet,, how i so in love with the design and clean it was..Can say our first time experienced in The George Hotel for an Afternoon Tea was good and memorable. Looking forward to come back again and try something else there maybe the room, the food etcNearby activities: It is right in the center of City Center. Easy to find and also if you come here by Bus, no worries because there are bus stops in near the hotel
Caz H: The rooms are nice, and location good but it’s loud. I’d requested top floor, quiet room weeks before but didn’t get annoyingly. It took ages to check in as only one girl and a queue of 4 of us. She then put me a room with someone already in it. I came down quite frustrated as it was late, I’d waited ages and the experience was embarrassing and she didn’t even apologise!they never answer the phone. Not impressed and won’t stay again.
Lionheart: Walkability: Located on the high street right In the centre of the City. Perfect location In regards to accessibility.Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More

Ben Howard: Charged £25.15 for a single pint, obviously in error. It happens, not a problem. Popped in to ask them to investigate and refund, which they said they would do and call in the n3xt few days. 2 weeks later the manager as not called back as promised. Would not have been an issue if sorted, or even called to say it would take longer. Really disappointed.
Glen Smith: Given this is listed as a 3* hotel, it punches well above it's weight and delivers much more than I expected. Great central location, beautifully restored, impeccable service, lovely comfortable room and great choice of food an drink. Roomy, funky decor, terrific value - will be back!Rooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Romantic, Quiet, Great value …More
James Garnham: I have stayed In this chain at Holland on sea and was expecting good things. It is a very old building and has some very old walls on display, wattle and daub type.Rooms are OK and clean. Breakfast was good , with good quality produce. Staff were helpful. Location is fab but you will face £9 a day parking at back of hotel. Note you need a permit to get to it. As a notewhatch out for the road in and around Colchester. They are some of the worst potholes , lighting on signs and they way the traffic planners have painted the road markings.

Wivenhoe House Hotel: what do users think?
David Harrington: Great hotelRooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Luxury, Quiet, Great value …More
Saint Bat: I absolutely love the atmosphere at Wivenhoe House. The setting in the grounds of the University of Essex overlooking one of the lakes is so beautiful at all times of the day but especially at sunset. This is very local to me & I have come here for years so have seen it change dramatically and improve aesthetically & structurally over the years as my father worked on the refurbishment. The old mansion has been extended with a very modern wing to house the restaurant.I WANT to give an honest review but I really WANT to give it a good review also. But i feel let down whenever I come for a meal which is often. The afternoon tea is always fantastic. As a vegetarian there is always something unusual & new to eat & their own veggie sausage rolls are delicious. There are some amazing cocktails on offer too.But when I come for a formal dinner I am always a bit disappointed. There is only ever one vegetarian option ,(other than pizza), & it often consists largely of something like mushroom or aubergine which are two of the only things I cannot eat. Fair enough, they don't know what I can't eat.But just ONE option ? When we ask for an alternative it invariably takes around 30mins of discussion & waiting around for a decision or suggestion to be made.It seems like a lot of hassle , almost embarrassment from me as it gets passed from one waitress to a waiter, to the manager & sometimes then the chef.Last time I was the one who had to suggest what could be made as nothing was actually offered. It would be great if you could include more than one option or at least have other suggestions ready without all the bother in such a high class restaurant. I want to love the food here & eat something with some imagination that I've never had before.

stephanie george: Great hotel with themed rooms but not fickle or trite. Quite classical in terms of themes.Afternoon tea was good, dinner was first class, breakfast cooked to order . Really enjoyable stay - not the easiest place to find. Iots of trainees doing a splendid job as it’s linked to the university hotel mngt courses .Standard of service is high.

Nikki Bedford: A fabulous getaway for a special birthday. The staff were wonderful and very welcoming. A delicious meal was had in the evening and a room service breakfast was a lovely treat.A small mix up on the bill when leaving was swiftly resolved when highlighted at reception. Can't wait to make a return visit.

Laura Love: Christmas Party arrived to a very cold venue, guests having to sit with coats on throughout the meal process.Food arrived cold and very poor quality even the gravy couldn’t warm the meal, on the roast the pigs in blankets had barely been shown to the oven. The bar had limited drinks available and what was available run out early into the evening.Other guests left shortly after not eating their meals which left the venue empty so took away from the Christmas Party atmosphere.Luckily the DJ Simon was great, played good music which got us dancing and warmed us up.I wouldn’t recommend this venue for any kind of event.Customer service unhelpful and basically calling us liars about the food being cold and the venue being cold and haven’t responded to the other points raised.Offered a one night stay for one how can that we split by 14 people and everyone has lost trust in the hotel.Avoid this place!
Sheridan Clare: Very nice experienceRooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Ana Rodrigues: Welcoming and Cosy. Staff were very nice and welcoming. If there's anything you need, do not be afraid/shy to ask, we were looking for a haunted room so they were quickly to change us to one of the "most haunted rooms" in the hotel. Ok, yes the place is old/antique, there's no sound proof windows so if you stay in one of the rooms that look out into the high street then it can be quite noisy, but we weren't really bothered about those things and it's to be expected when you stay in a old hotel, so people shouldn't really be complaining and leaving bad reviews based on the obvious. It's just like going to a Zoo/farm and then complain about the smell of the animals! The Car park is in Osborne Street, a 5 min walk but it's only £4.95 for 24 hours so can't really complain. We also spent over an hour at the bar/restaurant talking to the gentleman working the night shift, it was lovely and refreshing to find such a down to Earth person. Overall it's a 5 out of 5, we really enjoyed our stay and thanks for having us.
Karen Webb: THE FOOD WAS HOT and fresh.Served quickly and with agood waitress .The atmosphere of old and cosy was so relaxing and enjoyableThankyouService: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Helen Mchugh: We had our Christmas works meal here in Friday. If depression were to be expressed through the medium of food they did a marvellous job. All.meals were cold; the roast was semi-passable, the beef bourguignon looked like canned war meat; the carbonara was cooked in stock with feta and pickled beets sprinkled. They claimed tye cheesecake was gluten free, I realised it wasnt after taking a mouthful, asked again and was assured it was, before asking again and being told it wasnt - ive been quite ill since. Thanks for that
Arseni Intelman: Normally I'm picking up just on some weak points. Always giving a chance for improvement. Unfortunately this place deserved no second chance. Stay away is the verdict. We a had a corporate Christmas dinner. I was left with bitter feeling. Staff is really rude and unprofessional. Food is terrible. Nearly no choice of any drinks. No sparkling water for example. This place must me shot down and re opened under new management

Best Western The Rose and Crown Hotel: what do users think?
Lizzie Carter: Loved it..!! Bags of history and character, extremely comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff.Would definately book to stay again..
Tina Aylett: The room we had was lovely ,very clean and comfortable. But the young girl at breakfast didn't have a clue what she was doing infacr she was quite rude .. ordered coffee, and she brought us tea ,then making out we said tea ( when I know I wouldn't have because I don't drink tea) when the coffee did come it was cold . And the breakfast was definitely not value for money
Dan Scott Professional Wedding Photographer: Fantastic wedding venue! Beautiful old venue with amazing staff!
Ian Brown: Stay at Premier Inn instead.Run-down, poorly maintained (I want to say franchise) noisy and terrible location in a busy triangle of road.I won’t be using Best Western again.Rooms: Bed was relatively comfy but everything else was massively outdated and worn heavily.A really negative place to rest and work for an hour.Noteworthy details: Bins get emptied at 5am on a Wednesday, which is always nice to hear the refuse workers having a chat about the football.Windows offer very little protection against noise and light is an issue in the room as the business is illuminated and constantly feels like it’s morning.Terrible squeaky floors above woke me every time the resident above moved.Paintwork and furniture are run-down and tired. Not enough power sockets and doors were heavy, thick and stick.

Lucian Harris-Antwis: Booked ahead for the Afternoon Tea with a BUYAGIFT voucher I purchased over a year ago, the person who took the booking over email was incredibly helpful in accommodating us with a time and date. We were a bit late due to parking but when we arrived, we received the warmest greeting from Daniel, who went above and beyond to make us comfortable in a lovely designed hotel. The Afternoon Tea itself was delicious - we finished every bite and honestly could eat it all over again! The sandwiches were so fresh and had tasty fillings, and the variety of cakes were incredible. We would definitely return and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. We’ve never been to Afternoon Tea together and this was a spectacular first experience, so thanks very much Daniel & Team!

N R: Lovely short stay at this hotel (1 night). Free parking on site, the entrance to the car park is extremely narrow so you do have to pull in your wing mirrors. Email from the hotel does confirm this which was nice for them to add. Conveniently close to the town, just a 5min walk. There is a slight incline though so be mindful of that. Bedroom facilities are good for a short stay. Breakfast is continental and had a good variety of food. Nice seating area out the back to enjoy drinks/ food. Staff really lovely and friendly too.

Dragonfly Hotel: what do users think?
S G (Rock on): Attractive riverside location and would be a lovely hotel if not so obviously run on a shoestring. Clearly understaffed (although staff tried very hard to deliver on service despite this) and in need of some refurbishment.Having said all the above the beds were very comfortable, there were some cosy public areas in which to relax and unwind and the staff were friendly.Food & drinks: We were warned, by another guest, that the food was bad but although breakfast lacked variety it was tasty and well cooked.
Caminos SAS: Lugar adecuado.El extractor del baño no funciona. Al igual que el funcionamiento del calentador del cuarto, no funciona el control o regulador de temperatura. Brewster Joanne: Basic hotel clean and tidy.Slept well.Staff polite friendlyLocation was just right; attending concert
Lee Murray-King: You get what you pay for.Serves a purpose for 1 night stay.
Gerry Pearson: Went here with pre paid two night stay and was asked for further 25pounds as pre-authorised payment, for what. I never got to find out because all the receptionist kept repeating was the pre-authorised payment. Asked to speak to manager and she then went away only to return without him/her. I would not pay any money and another person appeared and to my amazement relayed that the manager had not been in at all that day. Have stayed there many times before and never had any problems but I will never stay there again.Such a shame as there used to be very good staff there but on this occasion I really don't know what was going on.I left without staying and lost my money as I will not pay for something that I've already paid for.
Giovan Cordella: I was expecting a room with a lake view instead we have a building site view other than that everything else was as expected. The bedroom iwas decent and the bed super king and very comfortable. They do a very attractive happy hour from 4 to 6, a large wine for £2.50 not bad at all.Rooms: Clean room with extra large comfortable bed. The bathroom had a bath tub which could have been replaced with a more modern shower. Overall good value for money.
Rachael Davey: Rooms were clean and comfortable, on par with Premier Inn.Had to request heating to be turned on at reception.Breakfast was dire on Saturday, one poor lady running restaurant and cooking, hardly any food/drink put out we had to ask several times for things. I felt really sorry for her. She did her best and was still cheerful.Sunday was better, more staff, more food options, although items still missing.Reception was unmanned, so I was unable to report the blocked sink early in the day. Did report early evening and was offered another room.Restaurant very quiet in evening despite car park being full. Vegan burgers were very tasty. However, there was no vegan cheese, salad, or sauce with it.Canelloni was very nice .The hotel has a nice interior and looks very welcoming apart from self service check in machine, which we were unable to work onThis could be a lovely hotel if it wasn't run on a shoe string .
George Bourne: I beg anyone who is thinking of staying here with a car not to do it.I registered my vehicle at reception when I stayed in October 2022. 3months later I receive a letter saying the bailiffs were coming to my house for a parking charge for a ticket I did not receive.I have called up multiple times, each time they ask for the “PCN” number but nothing is carried out.
Norman Battersby: Lovely place and staff 100%, but breakfast not 100%,Rooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Quiet …More
Mark Ovel: Very nice looking hotel, rooms big enough, bar and lounge area very nice and cosy.Staff are very welcoming, friendly and helpful.Free parking if you are staying at the hotel.Patio area over looking a lake which would be lovly in the summer, I went in January still looked nice but to cold to sit outside. The only negative I would say about the room was in bathroom there is a towel heater and it was damaged, it was taped up which looked horrible as its the first thing u see when you walk into bathroom. But it's a little thing nothing bad about the hotel or Staff. Bed was good with tv mounted on wall in front of bed.Would definitely go back there
Moody Outlaw: Great foodFriendly StaffComfortable roomsOverall Great Hotel and ExperienceRooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More

brett king: Arrived and spoke to reception to check in and they couldn't find me on the system! Later that night at 10:30pm I had a knock on my door by a staff member asking who I am! Also was looking forward to the curry night advertised on a leaflet in my room only to find that its not possible as the restaurant is closed due to a booked party! Breakfast was average at best, No sauces left out for food, staff seemed disinterested.

darron welch: Visited The Holiday Inn at Eight Ash Green Colchester. I was just there for a meeting and as I was early had a wander round looking at the facilities.I was made so very welcome here. The Staff were delightful and showed me around and nothing was too much trouble! The Hotel is very well positioned by the side of the A12! It's very near Colchester City Centre and there are numerous car parks or a very handy bus service . To be honest it's quite a nice walk to the City. It's very easy to get to Colchester Zoo from the Hoteland easy access to Colchester General Hospital for visiting. There is a good selection of Pubs in walking distance and its next to the new Staines Park Shopping Centre, where there are also restaurants. You can very easily drive to Suffolk on the A12 next to the Hotel or Chelmsford in the London direction. The hotel has a gym and very nice swimming pool! It has a lovely Restaurant and Bar, excellent facilities and location.Children are well catered for!

Simon: The hotel atmosphere was remarkable. However, the bed for my wife and I was too small. We had no room to turn on our sides during the night.Rooms: 4/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5Hotel highlights Great value …More
Caroline Clarke: Needed somewhere comfortable close to my father’s house in Marks Tey for when I come down to visit. This was a perfect place, we’ll definitely be back. Our room was an accessible one with a disability bathroom so quite close to reception. It was a decent size, the bed was comfortable, there was a tea/coffee/biscuit tray and a kettle. We’re vegan so didn’t get to use it very much and we thought a mini fridge would have been useful so it lost a star for that. The bar was nice, staff were really helpful - shoutout to George who helped me navigate my way to getting a vegan club sandwich for an evening snack in my room. Breakfasts were also good with plenty of vegan options.A very restful stay, thank you.
Katrina Zamimba: This hotel was nice n welcoming very good service. Will def be returning.Rooms: Comfy rooms warm n quietFood & drinks: Food was nice but over priced.
Jamie Terrell: Great little hotel, be careful of parking. I stopped with my mum after her hospital appointment to use the loo and got a parking ticket. It is not the Holiday Inn that monitor it. BEWARE.
T: They don't even.hoover your room when cleaning it, they can see carpet is dirty! StrangeRooms: 1/5|Service: 4/5|Location: 3/5 …More

St Nicholas Hotel: what do users think?
Bill Moors: Lovely area to visit, and this location is perfect to do that from. Couldn't be more central. The George is amazing value for food, which is excellent. The room we had, had a walk around balcony giving the best views of the city.Rooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Seruwaia Tegeilolo: Hallway was smelly as soon as we got off the lift. They took £25 off me when I checked in on the 11th and up till now they haven’t returned my money. Can hear the traffic in the night and I won’t be returning to this hotel.Pathetic serviceRooms: 1/5|Service: 1/5|Location: 1/5 …More
Andy Johnstone: Firstly, I have to say that getting to this place was a pain. It's located on a noted "Authorised Vehicles Only" road, so maps actively avoids it. Took quite a few round town trips to even get near. Upon getting there saw a notice saying that check ins were across the road at the George hotel, so that adds more hastle. Receptionist there was not the most welcoming, and was a bit shirty when I was asking for help to get the car to the car park, which is also at the George hotel.Once I was in the room seemed okay, but the living space was smaller than the bathroom, bed was quite cramped in its alcove. Road noise outside was quite bad, as it's full of delivery companies racing up and down on their mopeds until late in the evening.
Dipak Mistry: This is like the annex of the George Hotel across the road. While the room was neat and tidy the TV remote did not work. Having today reception it was still not working that evening.Breakfast was good and filling and great staff there. If you're driving to the hotel beware of one way system and parking is at the George Hotel which is almost £10 for 24 hours.
Ken Uwotu: A lady at the desk on 23 Nov were very unhelpful infact we asked to see rooms and she did every not to show us. Attitude bordered in racismRooms: 1/5|Service: 1/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Sarah Bull: Unfortunately I was disappointment with our stay in April. The reason for the delayed review is i have been waiting for a response from the hotel, Which i have never received - 5 months on i have still heard nothing!!It was booked as a valentine gift from my partner, so we could have a kid free evening and uninterrupted sleep. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case as we were woken at 4am by a fire alarm and had to evacuate the building. Now obviously I understand the seriousness of a fire alarm and sometimes it cannot be helped but it worries me that the reason for the alarm may have been from the room next to us smoking cannabis. On arrival at 5.30 as soon as the lift doors opened on level 3 the smell was overpowering. I commented to my partner about the smell and we presumed someone may have just arrived also. - we went out enjoyed our night and came back about 9pm - again the smell was still very strong. We also noticed outside on the balcony our next door neighbours always had their door open and the smell was very obvious.I’m very surprised that a member of staff didn’t patrol the hotel and notice this smell!? Surely this would have been flagged up if a walkabout had of happened? Does someone from The George hotel not come and patrol the hotel at all?do feel had this of been the case the evacuation could have been avoided.
M Habib: Very clean and spacious family room for 4, very comfortable stay with young children. Checking in and checking put was straightforward. The only down side was parking, as it was a struggle to find. Our coffee machine also didn’t work very well. Other than that, great stay. Thank you St NicholasRooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 4/5 …More
Juliusz Korab-Karpowicz: Hot rooms. Check tripadvisor before proceeding.
Lora O'Hara: Lovely and clean rooms. Brilliant size. We will definitely stay againRooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Lorna Wilson: Supposed to have disabled access, very difficult on your own in manual chair, hotel you book into has no disabled access as one slippy worn step to get down. No access to food, tables in lounge too.low. Hotel was boiling with no aircon! Very noisy.Rooms: 2/5|Service: 1/5|Location: 4/5 …More
Daniel Knight: Good would stay again, is a loudd club or something just oposite the room i was in so very noisy.. but goodRooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More
Katie Smith: Like the other reviews for this hotel, it is clean and modern. But unfortunately like other reviews it’s hard to deny the cost and noise. During this current heatwave the most frustrating thing has to be that the room has no air con. However there is a control panel attached to the wall despite it not having any actually electricity attached to it, and no fan or vents in the whole room. Just rubbing salt in to the wound when it is so warm and to have the windows open hardly helps. Unfortunately makes the noise from the high street even worse. This will most probably be my last visit. Disappointed
Chantry Hopper: Visited a friend who was staying the night fantastic roomsRooms: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Location: 5/5 …More

Petra Humm: Bar area has been moved and is much better in its new location. The menu now serves small plates and had a good selectionFood: 4/5|Service: 4/5|Atmosphere: 4/5 …More
Jill Thorne: Best place for Sunday lunch. I had roast beef and such good quality and plentiful plate. Service is friendly and welcoming and nice ambiance.Food: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More
Justine Osborne: Went as a family group of 12, we had Sunday dinner, food was truly fabulous, well worth the wait, staff friendly and helpful.Dietary restrictions: There were Gluten Free options
Fiona Josephs: Giving five stars for food but sadly service was slow and young waitress not friendly and obviously did not want to be there. Was a birthday meal and also as I can only have one treat meal a month would of preferred a warmer experience. I appreciate that times are harder and staffing has to be less but that in turn makes staff grumpier and also we would of spent more money if staff visible. Had to be found to ask for service. The previous times been have always been great. Smaller plates means more work for chef and waiting staff but they were very good and churros was yumptious.
Pete D: Really friendly welcome and lots of seating options. Well priced drinks. Will probably return for food but it was suggested that the portions are quite small (explains the reasonable prices one would think)Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 4/5 …More
darron welch: We enjoyed a lovely evening on Friday night 17/3/23.4 of us visited and had drinks in the bar before sitting at a lovely round table in the restaurant. The Staff were very Friendly. We enjoyed the new menu which was like having British Tapas. It was great to share everything and the food was tasty , cooked nicely and well presented. We will definately go back.
Jasz DV: I had seen good reviews on here and booked for Mother's Day for Sunday Lunch, but we left disappointed. wait staff were very accommodating and very polite, throughout the whole time, but the wait time for mains was just far too long, so we paid for what we had and left. We bumped into another table outside who has just left and they also said they had waited a long time for food. Food was only suddenly brought out as we were leaving but we were too grumpy at that point and it would have been aggro for all. Sadly disappointing, seemed lovely inside.
Jacqui: Great food new small plates menu and as usual friendly staff. The changes to the bar area are really goodFood: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 4/5 …More
Richard Howard: Great family Sunday lunch...thanks to allFood: 4/5|Service: 4/5|Atmosphere: 4/5Recommended dishes Roast Beef, Chocolate Fondant with Passion Fruit Mousse …More
martin erdbeer: We were very disappointed, they have taken away the table service and the bar is 20 metres away. 5 times I had to go to the bar to order or ask a question. The food was still nice but it’s only bar food now, it’s no longer a restaurant, it’s only small plates like Chicken goujons or fish Goujons and chips etc no more nice plates of well cooked food . We will only go for Sunday lunch which is still table service. I understand they have to make changes to stay alive but unfortunately it’s not for us, Colchester has lost a good restaurant it’s such a shame. But I guess that’s what the people voted for, I feel so sorry for the restaurant trade. Good luck green rooms .
Keith Chambers: We went to celebrate valentines. Very impressed, great service, great food lovely atmosphere, couldn’t fault will definitely be going back!
Lee Payne: Food was overseasoned, incredibly salty.Could have gotten away with half the salt.Food: 3/5|Service: 4/5|Atmosphere: 3/5 …More

Andrew Faithfull: A great place to have a Sunday lunch. Main roast was delicious with pink beef and tasty vegetables and potatoes. Food and drink were reasonably priced and service was good.
Steven Whybrow: Great food service and ambiance . Would thoroughly recommend it .will definitely be going againFood: 5/5|Service: 5/5|Atmosphere: 5/5 …More
PatPatHoneyHoneyPatPat: Had a fantastic meal here on Saturday 1/10/2022 . Everything was just how it should be , nothing was too much bother and the 2 waitresses were very polite with a smile on their faces. If you have an establishment with bad reviews then take a trip here to see how it’s done.
Theresa Whybrow: We went here last night for the first time, delicious food, great service, friendly staff, 10 out 10! Highly recommended.
Jacqui Kain: Sunday lunch. Best roast ever. Gorgeous. Great reception when arrived. Friendly staff.
Gail Jones: We had our wedding lunch here in the private function room and everything was just perfect. Two postponed dates included the staff couldn’t do enough and were amazing throughout the organisation-thank you Julie and Claire! On the day itself the room looked beautiful, the service was amazing and the food was incredible. Our guests were blown away by the choice they had and the quality on the day. Thank you for helping make our day perfect! Can’t wait to come back soon!
elizabeth haxton: Disappointing meal - usually v good. Duck overcooked and dry (had to ask for some more jus) ditto gratin dauphinois-more like a tortilla. Service good but Saturdays perhaps better avoided.
Chris High: We returned (from California) to this restaurant on July 4th, exactly 4 years after our last stay in the adjoining hotel. We loved it the first time: were ecstatic this time!I had the Arctic Char with all the perfect accompaniments, grilled fennel pomegranate sauce etc. Then the roasted banana cheesecake with powdered peanuts etc.So many careful touches. And choosing Estrella non alcoholic became a new favoriteThese people are a great experience the exterior is mellow- but go in and you and your stomach will rejoice
