Melissa Brown: My partner initially felt anxious about birth so we decided it would be helpful to hire a doula to help prepare us both and support us during pregnancy and labour. We really liked Caz from the first time we met and felt she gelled well with our personalities. She was clear and matter of fact about her services as well as being flexible with payment options. After we hired Caz, she was always helpful and responsive whenever I needed her. Whether it was to discuss a midwife appointment, recommendations for tongue tie assessment or advice on dealing with my older child's reaction to her new sister. Our antenatal sessions were lovely and informal which helped us all get to know eachother. Caz provided us with books (highly recommend "The Father's Homebirth Handbook" for anyone considering a homebirth) which were especially helpful for my partner as a first time Dad. She also leant us her beautiful doll family which includes 2 parents, a baby, a toddler, placenta, umbilical cord and mini birthing pool. My daughter really enjoyed playing with them and they are a great tool for role-playing birth with children.Caz was always there for me to bounce my thoughts off but never told me what to do or had any agenda of her own. She just listened, gave me information and asked me how I felt about something. She encouraged and empowered me to make my own decisions. Birth pool and TENS machine hire were included and I'm so glad we chose to use both. Caz talked us through how to set up use them so we felt confident when the time came. The TENS was a huge help to me, especially in early labour before I called Caz or my midwife. The night I went in to labour we were in regular contact and Caz made sure she was well rested before coming to our house. She was the perfect calming presence, talking when I wanted to talk and staying quiet and observing when I didn't. I know that having her there, a familiar face who had seen loads of births before, made my partner feel at ease. For some, their birth might be all hands on deck but for me, I was in my own world in the pool and didn't want to be touched. Caz and my partner respected this and kept the environment how I wanted it - quiet and relaxed. When I was struggling to birth my placenta, Caz offered lots of helpful advice before supporting me in my decision to accept the oxytocin injection from my midwife.During my labour and birth Caz took some wonderful pictures which I will treasure forever. She also took some beautiful pictures of my placenta and umbilical cord as well as putting it away in a container in the freezer for us. She tidied everything up for us which was a huge help. She made sure we were all OK tucked up in bed before leaving us to get some rest.We had 2 postnatal visits with Caz which were really nice. Having someone to talk to, in those early days, who is interested in the parents and not just the baby is a huge support. She asked about all the right things and gave us really helpful information about things like safe bedsharing. This would never be anecdotal or opinion-based, it was always factual. After our last visit, we were both really sad to say goodbye to Caz. She had been there with us through such an important time in our lives and we didn't want it to end!If anyone is considering hiring a doula, do it! I had a wonderful pregnancy and birth experience and a lot of that was down to the confidence Caz helped build in me and my partner. Birth didn't feel scary or dramatic, it was just...normal! And I think that's what you want from a birth support person, for them to make it feel normal.
Rebecca Wheelhouse: I contacted Starfish Doula quite late in my pregnancy around 30 weeks, and I received a reply straight away reassuring me that a pool would be sourced. I hired a mini pool which was plenty big enough for me, it filled the centre of the living room which space to walk around. The kit was brilliant, and the delivery along with a thorough explanation of how to use was also brilliant. Offering a prompt pick up if the pool after use was also a blessing.Personally, the pool made my homebirth. I was starting to really struggle and as soon as I entered the pool I felt weightless and able to properly relax between contractions.Thankyou so much for offering this amazing thing around Bradford! Should I choose to have another baby, I will definitely be in touch.
